A Classic Saarland Village Kirmes
The Kirmes Oberbexbach is a classic example of the Saarland village kirmes: a three-day folk festival that transforms the Oberbexbach district of Bexbach into a festival ground on the last weekend of July. The kirmes is organized by the Ortsrat Oberbexbach (local council) together with the Interessengemeinschaft Oberbexbach (INGO) — the association of the district's clubs and restaurateurs. This dual sponsorship ensures both official recognition and civil society anchoring of the kirmes.
Program and Format
The program follows the proven choreography of the Saarland kirmes:
- Friday evening — Kirmes begins, first rides open, family program at the edge of the festival grounds
- Saturday 6 PM — Keg Tapping as the official opening of the festival evening; followed by live music from a new or established band, catering by the district's restaurants
- Sunday — Family Day with Frühshoppen (morning pint), lunch specials, afternoon program for children, winding down in the evening
Food is served with the full range of Saarland folk festival cuisine: Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), Lyoner (sausage), Bratwurst (fried sausage), fries, everything on tap, plus wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic refreshments.
Family Program and Rides
A traditional Palatinate showman family sets up their carousels and rides on the festival grounds — typically bumper cars, a chain carousel, a children's carousel, a shooting gallery, a ring toss game, and snack stands. The format is family-friendly, with a mix of locals, relatives visiting home, and kirmes travelers from the Saarpfalz district.
Bexbach and the Saarpfalz District
Bexbach, with a good 18,000 inhabitants, is one of the traditional mining towns in Saarland, located in the Saarpfalz district east of Saarbrücken. Bexbach is known for its Saarländisches Bergbau-Museum (Saarland Mining Museum) with the "Pinge" visitor mine, for the Blumengarten (Flower Garden) with annual summer flower exhibitions, and for a vibrant carnival and club scene. Oberbexbach is one of the districts where club life is particularly active — the kirmes is an expression of this activity.
Atmosphere
Anyone driving through Oberbexbach on the last weekend of July will see the scene that characterizes the Palatinate in summer: a festival ground with rides, a beer tent with live music, families with children on carousels, club members at tables in the shade of the trees. It is not a tourist magnet, but a lived-in district festival — and precisely for this reason, it is interesting for travelers who want to experience authentic Saarland folk festival life.
