Simson — East German cult on two wheels

The Suhl-based brand Simson shaped mobility in the GDR for decades. Models like the «Schwalbe», the S50, and S51 became synonymous with freedom and the first own motor for entire generations of young East Germans. Production ceased after reunification — but the fan base continued to grow. Today, Simson vehicles are sought-after collector's items, and meetups like the Sandhasentreffen Walldorf bring together thousands of enthusiasts aged 16 to 70.

Sandhasentreffen — from insider gathering to major event

From a small circle of Simson enthusiasts, Simson Sandhasen e.V. has developed a meetup over the years that is now considered one of the largest Simson events in Central Germany. The venue is the Walldorf industrial area in the Krayenberggemeinde (Wartburgkreis, Thuringia, on the border of the Hessian Rhön). The 8th edition on May 30/31, 2026, is officially confirmed — advance ticket sales are ongoing, and the Kaltennordheim town council has announced the event on its events page.

The Program — Races, Scenic Tour, Party

Saturday kicks off with a full day's program starting at 8 AM — featuring drag races on the marked course in the industrial area, skill riding, and vendors for spare parts, tuning, and memorabilia. In the evening, a festival tent party with Nikolaschka and the Dorfrocker. Sunday starts with a traditional morning pint (Frühschoppen) with the Famberg Musikanten, accompanied by dumplings, roasts, and games for children. The highlight in the afternoon is the Rhön scenic tour — a joint ride through the Rhön, organized by the event organizers with a fixed route.

Krayenberggemeinde and the Rhön

The Krayenberggemeinde was formed in 2013 from several villages, including Walldorf, which has responded prominently to the meetup — the municipality of Kaltennordheim, to which Walldorf now belongs, officially announces the event on its website. The location on the edge of the Rhön makes it attractive: winding country roads, viewpoints, traditional gastronomy. Those arriving by Simson will find classic routes for cruising all around.
