A District Kirmes in the Rhön
Schwärzelbach is one of the districts of the municipality of Wartmannsroth in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen. As is customary in the Frankenwald and the Rhön, each district maintains its own Kirchweih — with its own date, its own program, and its own small festival committee. Schwärzelbach celebrates its Kirmes around the last weekend of September.
Kirmesspruch and Weißwurstfrühstück
The program follows the classic Lower Franconian Kerwa liturgy: On Saturday evening, the Kirmesspruch will be proclaimed from 5 p.m. — a traditional, often humorous and satirical speech by the Kirmesburschen (festival youths) or the festival committee. From 9 p.m., there will be dancing and a festival tent party. On Sunday morning from 10 a.m., the traditional Weißwurstfrühstück with coffee and cake follows — the cozy conclusion to the Kirmes tradition.
Wartmannsroth and the Rhön Foothills
Wartmannsroth is a municipality with around 2,200 inhabitants in the district of Bad Kissingen, administrative region of Lower Franconia, state of Bavaria. The municipality is located on the southwestern edge of the Bavarian Rhön, between Bad Brückenau, Hammelburg, and Bad Kissingen. It comprises the districts of Wartmannsroth, Dittlobsroda, Heckmühle, Schwärzelbach, Schwärzelmühle, Völkersleier, and Windheim. This variety of districts results in a dense event calendar with several Kirchweihen spread throughout the year.
What Makes the Schwärzelbach Kerwa Special
Unlike large urban folk festivals, the Schwärzelbach Kerwa thrives on its simplicity and authenticity. Visitors from outside experience a Franconian Kirmes in its smallest and purest form: half the village meets, the parish is present, the local clubs serve. Those looking for an authentic piece of Rhön tradition — without tourist crowds — will find a genuine example here.
