About Kerwa Schwärzelbach

The Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of the Schwärzelbach district is part of the municipality of Wartmannsroth in the Bad Kissingen district. Every year around the last weekend of September, the small Lower Franconian village in the Rhön foothills celebrates: Saturday with the traditional Kirmesspruch (festival speech) and subsequent dance party from 9 p.m., Sunday with the classic Weißwurstfrühstück (white sausage breakfast) and coffee and cake. Schwärzelbach thus upholds the tradition of Lower Franconian Kirmes customs, which brings the entire village — parish, clubs, families — together for a weekend. The municipality of Wartmannsroth — located between Bad Brückenau and Bad Kissingen — carefully cultivates its district culture; each individual Kerwa has its own date and its own character.

A District Kirmes in the Rhön

Schwärzelbach is one of the districts of the municipality of Wartmannsroth in the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen. As is customary in the Frankenwald and the Rhön, each district maintains its own Kirchweih — with its own date, its own program, and its own small festival committee. Schwärzelbach celebrates its Kirmes around the last weekend of September.

Kirmesspruch and Weißwurstfrühstück

The program follows the classic Lower Franconian Kerwa liturgy: On Saturday evening, the Kirmesspruch will be proclaimed from 5 p.m. — a traditional, often humorous and satirical speech by the Kirmesburschen (festival youths) or the festival committee. From 9 p.m., there will be dancing and a festival tent party. On Sunday morning from 10 a.m., the traditional Weißwurstfrühstück with coffee and cake follows — the cozy conclusion to the Kirmes tradition.

Wartmannsroth and the Rhön Foothills

Wartmannsroth is a municipality with around 2,200 inhabitants in the district of Bad Kissingen, administrative region of Lower Franconia, state of Bavaria. The municipality is located on the southwestern edge of the Bavarian Rhön, between Bad Brückenau, Hammelburg, and Bad Kissingen. It comprises the districts of Wartmannsroth, Dittlobsroda, Heckmühle, Schwärzelbach, Schwärzelmühle, Völkersleier, and Windheim. This variety of districts results in a dense event calendar with several Kirchweihen spread throughout the year.

What Makes the Schwärzelbach Kerwa Special

Unlike large urban folk festivals, the Schwärzelbach Kerwa thrives on its simplicity and authenticity. Visitors from outside experience a Franconian Kirmes in its smallest and purest form: half the village meets, the parish is present, the local clubs serve. Those looking for an authentic piece of Rhön tradition — without tourist crowds — will find a genuine example here.

Kerwa Schwärzelbach — edition 2026

The Kirchweih Schwärzelbach 2026 will likely be celebrated on the last weekend of September — as in previous years. The exact date has not yet been finally confirmed at the time of research, but its recurrence is documented on the Wartmannsroth municipal website. Saturday features the Kirmesspruch (from 5 p.m.) and a dance party (from 9 p.m.), Sunday includes the Weißwurstfrühstück with coffee and cake starting at 10 a.m.

The previous format (example date September 28–29, 2024) follows the classic Lower Franconian Kerwa pattern. For 2026, the publication of the exact date is expected on the municipal website wartmannsroth.de. Telephone inquiries: 09737 9102-0.

The Schwärzelbach festival committee adheres to the traditional schedule: Saturday evening Kirmesspruch and dancing, Sunday morning a cozy Frühschoppen (morning pint) with Weißwurst and coffee.
