About Organ Vespers BMV

The Organ Vespers on May 2, 2026, at the Hauptkirche Beatae Mariae Virginis (BMV) in Wolfenbüttel bring together three great names of German organ music: Johann Sebastian Bach, Matthias Weckmann, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Andreas Sieling, one of Germany's most renowned organists and organist of the Berliner Dom, will be at the historic organ. The BMV—the impressive main church of the Lessingstadt—boasts exceptional acoustic qualities with its historic organ and sonorous interior, which do particular justice to organ music. The vespers at 4 PM are part of the BMV's traditional concert series and are among the fixed spiritual and musical highlights in Wolfenbüttel's cultural calendar. Admission is free; donations are welcome.

Hauptkirche BMV Wolfenbüttel

The Hauptkirche Beatae Mariae Virginis (BMV) on Kornmarkt is the largest and most representative church in the city of Wolfenbüttel. As the former court church of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg, it combines late Gothic and Baroque architectural elements and houses a historically significant organ, built in 1624 by Esaias Compenius (son) and expanded several times since. The organ sound in the BMV is of exceptional quality, making every concert visit a sonic experience.

Program spanning three eras

The program spans three centuries of German organ music. Matthias Weckmann (1616–1674) represents the North German organ school of the 17th century with its contrapuntal clarity and improvisational freedom. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) brings organ art to its highest perfection in his preludes, fugues, and chorale preludes. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) develops the tradition romantically, creating milestones in romantic organ literature with his six organ sonatas.

Andreas Sieling at the Organ

Andreas Sieling, organist of the Berliner Dom, is one of the most distinguished German organists of our time. His artistic quality, historical knowledge, and mastery of both historical and contemporary organ literature make his concerts exceptional events. His performance on the historic BMV organ promises a special musical experience.

Organ Vespers BMV — edition 2026

On Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 4 PM, an Organ Vespers featuring works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Matthias Weckmann, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy will take place at the Hauptkirche Beatae Mariae Virginis (BMV) in Wolfenbüttel. Andreas Sieling, organist of the Berliner Dom, will perform on the historic organ. The Vespers are part of the BMV's established concert series. Admission is free; donations are welcome.

Vespers Concert with Three Eras

The vespers, as a spiritual and musical form of devotion, harmoniously combines the concert dimension with the spiritual dimension. Works from the North German organ school (Weckmann), Baroque perfection (Bach), and early Romanticism (Mendelssohn) make the developmental lines of German organ music tangible.
