Living Kirchweih (fair) customs in the Rhön
The traditional Kirmes in Zeitlofs is a living testament to Franconian Kirchweih (fair) culture. Every year in November, the Kirmesburschen (fair lads) organise the Kirmes – a village custom passed down through generations, carried on by the local youth.
The centrepiece is the Kirmesbaum (fair tree): The Kirmesburschen go into the forest, fell a slender conifer, peel it, and decorate the crown with colourful ribbons. On Saturday at 2 p.m., the tree is ceremoniously erected in the village centre – the traditional start of the Kirmes.
Sunday features a church service and a communal feast, accompanied by festivities with food and drink. The event concludes on Monday from 10 a.m. with a hearty Weißwurstfrühstück (white sausage breakfast) at the Fränkischer Hof. The festival thus spans several days, combining a religious occasion, village community, and social gathering.
Zeitlofs is a market town in the district of Bad Kissingen in Bavaria, located at the transition from the Rhön to the Spessart. The Kirmes is one of the defining social events of the year and an expression of the region's vibrant tradition.
In 2026, the Kirmesburschen will once again host the traditional Kirmes in Zeitlofs – as every year in November. The exact date (early November) is yet to be announced by Markt Zeitlofs.
