Largest open-air event in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region with four stages on the Planken
Mannheim has been a UNESCO City of Music since 2014 — an award that honors the city's musical tradition from the Baroque Mannheim School (with composers like Stamitz and Cannabich, who established the precursor to the symphony) to today's Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. The Mannheim City Festival on the Planken actively leverages this tradition: the city sees itself as a musical showcase and uses the city festival to present local and international talents. With four stages, a multi-hour program per stage, and its central location on the Planken — Mannheim's famous shopping axis between Wasserturm and Paradeplatz — the City Festival is the largest free open-air event in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.
The programming is spread across four dedicated stages: The VTM Stage (Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund Rhein-Neckar) typically features pop, rock, and cover bands. The UNESCO City of Music Stage emphasizes the city's musical identity with performances by graduates of the Mannheim Popakademie, high-caliber local acts, and occasional international guests. The Feuerio Stage is named after the Mannheim carnival club Feuerio and offers party music, Schlager, and dance-oriented formats. The Kulturnetz Stage focuses on cultural diversity — migrant communities, smaller acts, alternative formats.
Confirmed acts for 2026 include AYLA (a German pop/soul voice who gained attention in recent years with singles like 'Talk Dirty' and appearances at the ESC pre-selection), Lina Bó (R&B singer with a modern German-English style), and Chris Cosmo (songwriter with pop hits in the German charts). In addition, around 40 to 60 other acts will perform on the four stages over three days — a cross-section of the German-speaking and regionally significant music scene.
Beyond the music, the City Festival broadens its offerings: an arts and crafts market along the Planken presents handmade ceramics, jewelry, textiles, and leather goods. The children's festival (with its own area, workshops, performances) is specifically aimed at families. Walking acts such as stilt walkers, jugglers, and street theater wander through the crowds, creating unexpected encounters. Street food stalls with international cuisine — from Thailand to Mexico, from Italy to Turkey — complete the offering. A true city festival atmosphere that reflects Mannheim's multicultural identity.
The Mannheim City Festival 2026 will take place from Friday, May 29 to Sunday, May 31, 2026, on the Planken — the iconic shopping axis in Mannheim's city center. Opening hours: Friday 2:00 PM–1:00 AM, Saturday 10:00 AM–1:00 AM, Sunday 11:00 AM–10:00 PM. Admission is completely free.
