A stylish city weekend with fashion shows, live music, ESC public viewing, and Sunday shopping
Mannheim is Germany's only city with a grid-like street layout based on squares — a unique urban planning concept from the 17th century that still shapes the city centre today. What began as the residential city of the Electoral Palatinate is now a vibrant industrial, university, and cultural metropolis in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. When the city invites you to its Experience Weekend, the entire city centre becomes a stage — in a city that is already a cultural heavyweight with its music university (birthplace of German pop), the National Theatre (one of Germany's oldest theatres), and the Popakademie.
The 2026 edition runs on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17, 2026 under the motto "Fashion & Music". The event is organised by the City of Mannheim in cooperation with the city centre retailers, the National Theatre, the Popakademie, and several local initiatives.
Stages and activity areas:
Mannheim is one of Germany's pop capitals — the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg has been training Germany's music business elite here since 2003. Consequently, the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 will be broadcast on Saturday evening with a large public viewing event in the city centre — featuring a party atmosphere, live acts during breaks, and one of the largest open-air gatherings in Mannheim of the year.
The National Theatre Mannheim — one of Germany's oldest and most renowned theatres (founded in 1779, Schiller's "The Robbers" premiered here in 1782) — is opening its costume archive to the public. Performances by the opera choir on the Planken on Sunday.
The large Stoffmarkt Holland (Fabric Market Holland) gathers on the Marktplatz with over 120 vendors from the Netherlands and Germany: fabrics, wool, sewing accessories, haberdashery — a pilgrimage site for the sewing community of Southern Germany.
On Sunday, May 17, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Mannheim's shops will open their doors for Sunday shopping with special promotions. A historic tram will offer free rides around the city centre.
The 2026 edition transforms the entire Mannheim city centre — from Marktplatz to Paradeplatz, from the Planken to the Kapuzinerplanken — into a comprehensive experience stage. The "Fashion & Music" theme will be presented on numerous stages, activity areas, and special events.
Highlight on Saturday evening: the grand ESC public viewing on Paradeplatz. Mannheim, home of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg, broadcasts the Eurovision Song Contest with live acts during breaks and a party atmosphere. On Sunday, shops open for Sunday shopping from 1 PM to 6 PM, and a historic tram offers free rides through the city centre.
Admission to the entire Experience Weekend: free. The ESC public viewing and fashion shows are also freely accessible. Purchases in shops and food/drinks at stalls are paid for directly — all common payment methods accepted. Historic tram on Sunday is free.
By train: Mannheim Hauptbahnhof (ICE hub) — from there, a 5-minute walk to the city centre. By car: A6/A656 exits Mannheim Mitte. Multi-storey car parks within the city centre grid system (Q6/Q7, P3, Schloss, N7).
Admission to the Experience Weekend: free. Purchases, food, and drinks are paid for directly at the shops and stalls. Sunday shopping: 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
If you want to experience the ESC, arrive at Paradeplatz early on Saturday evening — it gets very crowded. If you're looking for fabrics, head to Marktplatz on Saturday morning (quietest and with the largest selection). Use the historic tram on Sunday — a free city experience with panoramic views.
Hotels in Mannheim city centre — from the Maritim am Schlosshof to the Best Western near the Hauptbahnhof. Heidelberg (20 mins by public transport) and Ludwigshafen are also good bases.
