Mannheim — The City of Squares as a Stage
Mannheim is Germany's only city with a grid-like street layout based on squares — a unique urban planning concept from the 17th century that still shapes the city centre today. What began as the residential city of the Electoral Palatinate is now a vibrant industrial, university, and cultural metropolis in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. When the city invites you to its Experience Weekend, the entire city centre becomes a stage — in a city that is already a cultural heavyweight with its music university (birthplace of German pop), the National Theatre (one of Germany's oldest theatres), and the Popakademie.
2026 Programme — May 16 and 17
The 2026 edition runs on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17, 2026 under the motto "Fashion & Music". The event is organised by the City of Mannheim in cooperation with the city centre retailers, the National Theatre, the Popakademie, and several local initiatives.
Stages and activity areas:
- Planken — Main shopping street, with fashion shows, live acts, walking bands
- Marktplatz — Large fabric market with 120+ vendors
- Paradeplatz — Shanty choir, stage programme
- Kapuzinerplanken O5/O6 — CrossFit community workout, Pickleball demonstrations
- ÖVA-Passage — Fashion show with musical accompaniment
- Quartier Q6/Q7 — Motto "Fashion Meets Taste" with music, culinary delights, interactive activities
- City area — Stilt walkers distributing sweets, historic fire engines
2026 Highlights
ESC Public Viewing on Saturday Evening
Mannheim is one of Germany's pop capitals — the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg has been training Germany's music business elite here since 2003. Consequently, the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 will be broadcast on Saturday evening with a large public viewing event in the city centre — featuring a party atmosphere, live acts during breaks, and one of the largest open-air gatherings in Mannheim of the year.
National Theatre Opens Costume Archive
The National Theatre Mannheim — one of Germany's oldest and most renowned theatres (founded in 1779, Schiller's "The Robbers" premiered here in 1782) — is opening its costume archive to the public. Performances by the opera choir on the Planken on Sunday.
Fabric Market with Over 120 Vendors
The large Stoffmarkt Holland (Fabric Market Holland) gathers on the Marktplatz with over 120 vendors from the Netherlands and Germany: fabrics, wool, sewing accessories, haberdashery — a pilgrimage site for the sewing community of Southern Germany.
Sunday Shopping
On Sunday, May 17, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Mannheim's shops will open their doors for Sunday shopping with special promotions. A historic tram will offer free rides around the city centre.
