One of the largest folk festivals in the St. Wendel region, held around the Assumption of Mary
The Marpingen MarienKirmes is a true Kirchweih (church consecration festival): it is traditionally celebrated around the holiday of Assumption of Mary on August 15th, a public holiday in the Catholic-influenced Saarland. The feast day of the parish community of Visitation of Mary gives the Kirmes its name – and its anchor in the church year. Anyone who wants to understand Saarland must experience a Marien-Kirmes like this: a piece of living popular piety, combined with carousels, bratwurst, and live music.
Marpingen in the St. Wendel district is known beyond the region: in 1876, three girls are said to have experienced Marian apparitions here, making the town one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Germany. To this day, believers make pilgrimages to the Härtelwald – and the significance of the Marian festival in village life is correspondingly high. The Kirmes is the secular extension of this religious connection.
The venue for the Kirmes is Marienstraße in the town center, along with the festival grounds and the surrounding side streets. Here, amusement rides, children's carousels, shooting galleries, crêpe, Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), and almond stalls line up. The main stage with live bands is traditionally located in the middle of Marienstraße – and fills up in the evenings with dancing crowds from all over the St. Wendel region.
The MarienKirmes classically spans five days, from Wednesday to Sunday. Proven schedule:
What distinguishes the Marpingen Kirmes from the urban Saarspektakel: here it is personal. Half the village is involved in clubs, the parish community, or the fire department, many stalls are run by local groups, and the Schoppen (a measure of wine or cider) at the morning pint table is refilled faster than the next beer. Those looking for genuine Saarland *Kerwe* charm – away from the big events in Saarbrücken – will get their money's worth here.
As every year, the MarienKirmes takes place around the feast of the Assumption of Mary (August 15th). In 2026, the holiday falls on a Saturday – making the big weekend of the Kirmes correspondingly central. The festival mile on Marienstraße is open continuously from Wednesday evening to Monday.
The detailed band program will be published in July 2026 on marpingen.de.
