Tips
Those who want to experience the religious tradition should come for the Corpus Christi mass and procession. Those who "only" want to experience the festival can come directly to the Pfarrwiese from midday. A combination with a visit to the Härtelwald and the Marian pilgrimage site is worthwhile.
A Tradition from Catholicism
The Pfarrwiesenfest in Marpingen is one of the most traditional parish festivals in Saarland and is set in an unusually deep religious context. The organizer is the parish of Maria Königin des Friedens Marpingen (Diocese of Trier). The festival traditionally begins on Corpus Christi – one of the central feasts of the Catholic church year – and follows directly after the Corpus Christi procession.
Marpingen as a Pilgrimage Site
Marpingen is known in Saarland and beyond as a Marian pilgrimage site. In 1876, three girls are said to have experienced Marian apparitions in the Härtelwald – since then, Marpingen has been a destination for Catholic pilgrims from all over Europe. The parish of Maria Königin des Friedens continues this spiritual tradition, and the Pfarrwiesenfest has its firm place within this framework.
From the Final Blessing to Fellowship
The course of the festival reflects the connection between liturgy and social life: after the Corpus Christi mass and the solemn procession through Marpingen, the community gathers on the Pfarrwiese. With the sacramental final blessing, the liturgical part ends, and the secular parish festival begins – fellowship, shared food and drink, conversations among neighbors, clubs, and pilgrims.
Catering and Children's Program
The parish clubs – the church choir, young parish, KAB, women's association, altar servers – take care of the catering. Classics of Saarland parish festival cuisine are on the tables: Bratwurst, Schwenker, Lyoner, fries, cake, Saarschoppen, coffee. For children, there is an accompanying program with games and small craft activities, often including a bouncy castle.
Diocese of Trier and Saarland
Marpingen is located in the St. Wendel district, the rural-Catholic part of Saarland. The Diocese of Trier is one of the oldest dioceses in Germany and significantly shapes the religious landscape of Saarland. Parish festivals like the one in Marpingen are not only religious celebrations but also identity-forming events for the village community.
Multi-day Format
In 2026, the Pfarrwiesenfest will unusually extend from June 4th to June 9th. This includes Corpus Christi (June 4, 2026, Thursday) and the following weekend. Program points are spread over several days, with a focus on Corpus Christi itself and the following weekend.
