The Windmill in Nebel
The Amrum windmill is located in Nebel-Süddorf on the North Frisian island of Amrum in the district of Nordfriesland (Schleswig-Holstein). Built in 1771, it is one of the oldest preserved windmills on the island and today a landmark with a museum. Once a year — on the nationwide German Mill Day (Whit Monday) — it becomes the scene of a big island festival.
A Tradition for Decades
The German Mill Day, proclaimed nationwide every Whit Monday by the German Association for Mill Science and Preservation (DGM), has its own very North Frisian touch on Amrum: ecumenical open-air service, concert by an external music band, traditional costume dance by the Amrum costume group in front of the mill, performance by the Amrum shanty choir with sea shanties, and catering with bratwurst, fries, crêpes, coffee, and cake.

Island Tradition with Historical Connection
On Amrum, the mill plays an identity-forming role to this day: for centuries, the barren island was shaped by agriculture, fishing, and the mill as a central supply point. Today, the mill is a museum, a landmark, and once a year, the center of the island festival. The Mill Day thus fits perfectly into the triad of customs (costume group), maritime culture (shanty choir), and community life (church community) that sustains island life in North Frisia.
