Traditional Johannisfest and Wine Festival in Wendelsheim by the community center at the end of June
Wendelsheim is a picturesque wine village in the southern Wonnegau, nestled in the rolling hills between Alzey and the Donnersberg. With around 800 inhabitants, the historic Wendelinus Church, and the surrounding vineyards, it embodies the typical Rhenish Hessian wine-growing village. The Johannisfest combines the ecclesiastical tradition of St. John's Day (June 24th) with the secular need for a summer festival to usher in the warm season.
The 2026 festival weekend begins on Friday, June 26th, with the opening in the evening, keg tapping, and a first concert evening. Saturday, June 27th, is the highlight of the festivities: exuberant atmosphere, live bands, and plenty of wine. On Sunday, June 28th, there will be a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) in the forenoon and relaxed festival activities in the afternoon and evening.
At the wine stands, Wendelsheim's vintners serve their own wines. Riesling, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, and Rosé dominate the selection. The wine is accompanied by Rhenish Hessian classics: Bratwürste (sausages), Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Spundekäs (cheese dip), Handkäs (cheese), Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart), and sweet Streuselkuchen (crumb cake). Cover bands and dialect musicians alternate on stage, creating the typical Rhenish Hessian festival atmosphere.
The venue, the square by the community center at Neugasse 3, forms the social heart of Wendelsheim. Throughout the year, club festivals, weddings, funeral coffees, and indeed the Johannisfest take place here. During the festival days, a marquee, stage, stalls, and catering stands are set up. The intimate size of the square ensures a familiar atmosphere that large events cannot offer.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
