Folk Festival in a Marian Pilgrimage Site
Marpingen, a municipality with around 10,000 inhabitants in the St. Wendel district, is known beyond the region as a Marian pilgrimage site: three girls are said to have had apparitions here in 1876, making it one of Germany's most important Catholic pilgrimage destinations. The Marpinger Marienkirmes is rooted in this history – even if the folk festival today is secular and colourful, differing little from other Saarland fairs.
Three Days on the Fairground
The Kerb runs for three days on the central Marpingen fairground. Rides for young and old, carousels, stalls with classic shooting gallery culture, a well-stocked snack selection of Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), Lyoner sausages, and crêpes – the Marpinger Kerb is a classic Saarland village fair. Live music and DJ sets complement the family-oriented program during the day and into the evening hours.
Highlight: Fireworks on Tuesday
As with many Saarland fairs, the closing fireworks on Tuesday evening are the emotional highlight. The Marpinger Kerb traditionally ends the summer fair season in the St. Wendel district.
ASV Alsbachtal as Co-organizer
The local club ASV Alsbachtal Marpingen is closely involved in the fair's activities and also uses the event for club financing. Snack stands and catering by the club are an integral part of the Kerb.
In the St. Wendel District
Marpingen is located in the north of Saarland, in the Saar-Hunsrück low mountain range. The region is characterized by meadows, forests, and small villages. With Tholey, St. Wendel, and Bostalsee lake, the Marpinger Kerb is embedded in a touristically interesting environment.
