Three-day anniversary festival at the Murg fire station
In 1876 – almost at the same time as the Hochrhein tunnel from Albbruck to Schaffhausen was being planned – Murg citizens founded a music section within the Volunteer Fire Brigade. Over the decades, this small group of wind players developed into a full-fledged band with its own repertoire and a firm place in the community life of the Hochrhein village. 150 years later, the Murg Fire Brigade Music and Volunteer Fire Brigade are celebrating this anniversary with a joint festival weekend at the fire station in the Niederhof district.
The festival begins on Saturday, July 25th, 2026, with a ceremonial act in the festival tent: welcome speeches, honors, musical contributions from the anniversary band and friendly associations, followed by an evening celebration with live music. On Sunday, July 26th, the grand festival Sunday starts in the morning with a morning pint, a midday meal in the festival tent, performances by friendly brass bands from the region, and a children's program in the afternoon. On Monday, July 27th, the festival concludes with the craftspeople's get-together – morning pint, pork knuckle, and a relaxed end to the day.
In parallel to the musical program, the Murg Volunteer Fire Brigade is showcasing an exhibition of historical fire engines: old turntable ladders, fire trucks from the 1950s, hand pumps from the late 19th century, and the current operational vehicle. The exhibition is accessible during the day on Sunday and Monday.
Murg is located directly on the Hochrhein river in the Waldshut district, opposite the Swiss municipality of Schwaderloch. This small community, with its districts of Niederhof, Hänner, and Oberhof, is one of the most traditional places in the southern Black Forest. Niederhof, the venue, is situated on a hill above the Rhine valley – a scenically attractive festival site with views of the Hochrhein and the Swiss Alps.
The 2026 festivities celebrate the 150th birthday of the Murg Fire Brigade Music. The festival weekend combines musical tribute with traditional Hochrhein festival tent atmosphere: ceremonial act with honors on Saturday, grand festival Sunday with morning pint and friendly bands, and a craftspeople's get-together on Monday.
The musical program is accompanied by an exhibition of historical fire engines – from the hand pump from the late 19th century to the modern fire truck. The Murg Volunteer Fire Brigade thus presents not only its own history but also the development of firefighting in the Hochrhein region.
