Kite flyers' spectacle in the Hotzenwald — Giant kites, night flying, and family program
The Family Kite Festival in Hütten is one of the most beautiful kite festival events in Southern Germany — a two-day event that attracts thousands of families from the southern Black Forest, Switzerland, and Alsace every September. 12th and 13th September 2026, Rickenbach-Hütten gliding airfield. The organizer is the Luftsportgemeinschaft Hotzenwald e.V., the local gliding club.
National and international kite flyers present their sometimes gigantic creations. Giant kites up to 30 meters long — from long snake kites and enormous animals (whales, octopuses, dragons) to creative sculptures — will fill the sky above the Hotzenwald. On a separate area, stunt kite pilots will demonstrate precise choreographies with steerable stunt kites — a meditative, almost dance-like spectacle. Kite flyers travel from all over Europe, some from overseas.
Families will find a packed program: in the kite-making school, children can craft their own kites from reeds and paper — under the guidance of experienced kite builders. The kites can be flown immediately after construction. Additionally, the kite shop offers kites for all ages and skill levels — from beginner stunt kites to professional models.
The festival's highlight is the night flying on Saturday evening: kites with LED lighting and glow sticks dance against the night sky. In the darkness, the illuminated kites appear like floating, magical light sculptures — a fascinating spectacle that delights children and adults alike. Live music and catering provide the fitting evening ambiance.
Rickenbach (Waldshut district, code 08337) is located in the southern Black Forest at an altitude of around 900 m — the Hotzenwald is a characteristic high plateau between the High Rhine and the main ridge of the Black Forest. The Hütten gliding airfield is one of the highest airfields in Southern Germany and offers ideal conditions for kite sports due to its thermal location and open highland landscape. Access is via Wehr / Rickenbach.
Admission is free. Food and drinks are available from the club's own catering on the airfield — grilled sausages, fries, coffee, cake, cold and hot beverages. Bringing your own kite is explicitly welcome — there is plenty of space on the flying field. The festival is weather-dependent: program points may be adjusted in case of very strong winds or rain.
On September 12th and 13th, 2026, the Rickenbach-Hütten gliding airfield will transform into a giant kite playground. Kite flyers from Germany and Europe will present spectacular creations — from 30-meter-long snake kites and giant animals to stunt kite choreographies.
Families will find a dedicated crafting area in the kite-making school, and kites for all ages can be purchased at the kite shop. Highlight: the night flying on Saturday evening with illuminated kites.
Free admission. Food and drinks available from the club's own catering.
