Franconian Kerwa around the moated castle and St. Margaret's Church
Rügland — first documented in 1137 — celebrates its Kirchweih in one of the most beautiful spots in Middle Franconia: around the moated castle of the Crailsheim family from the late 16th century and the Protestant St. Margaret's Church, which was rebuilt in 1754 after the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. The Kerwa is one of the central village festivals for the small rural community in the Ansbach district.
The Rügland Sports Club is the organizer, responsible for the marquee, stage program, and logistics year after year. Culinary catering is provided by Gasthaus Fetz and Dorn Brewery — a true village brewery that brews its beer just a few hundred meters from the festival grounds. For younger visitors, there are showmen with carousels, shooting galleries, and sweet stalls.
The Rügland Kerwa follows the established schedule of Franconian Kirchweih traditions: On Friday evening, the young men erect the Kirchweih tree, followed by the beer tapping in the marquee with live music from the Musikfreunde Unternbibert. Saturday is dedicated to the marquee program, while Sunday features the festive church service in St. Margaret's Church, the grand parade in the afternoon, and the crowning of the marksmen's and citizens' king in the evening.
A unique feature of Rügland: During the Kirchweih days, the castle, which is normally not publicly accessible, opens its doors. Former mayor Rudi Tischer guides visitor groups through the historic rooms — a rare opportunity to experience the moated castle from the late 16th and early 17th centuries (main building 1611) from the inside. The castle tours are one of the distinctive highlights of the Rügland Kerwa and a magnet far beyond the village.
The date of the Rügland Kerwa traditionally follows the weekend of Assumption of Mary around August 15th. In 2026, Assumption of Mary falls on a Saturday, so the Kirchweih is expected to be celebrated from Friday, August 14th, to Sunday, August 16th, 2026, with festivities concluding on Monday, August 17th. The exact program details will be communicated a few weeks before the festival via the municipal website and the Rügland municipal app.
The familiar structure is expected: beer tapping and Kirchweih tree on Friday, marquee entertainment on Saturday with dance music, festive church service and parade on Sunday, and the crowning of the marksmen's and citizens' king in the evening. As always, the festival will be accompanied by Gasthaus Fetz and Dorn Brewery — and the sought-after castle tours.
Current program details available via the Municipality of Rügland and the Rügland app.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Food, drinks, and marquee evenings are charged on-site. Castle tours may involve a contribution to costs — details from the municipality of Rügland.
Rügland is located in the Ansbach district between Ansbach and Neustadt an der Aisch, easily accessible via the state road ST 2245. Parking spaces on the outskirts of the village will be designated during the Kerwa.
