Central Franconian main town Kirchweih in October in the market town of Obernzenn
The Kirchweih Obernzenn is the main town Kirchweih of the market town of the same name in the district of Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim, Central Franconia. It is one of the defining festivals in the town's annual calendar – a date when families from all over the market area meet, relatives from the surrounding area arrive, and the Kärwa youth wear their traditional costumes. In 2026, it will take place from October 2nd to 5th, embedded in the dense Kirchweih calendar of the district.
The Kirchweih begins on Friday with the traditional raising of the Kirchweih tree in the town center. The Kärwa boys decorate the peeled trunk with ribbons and a wreath and erect it with long poles to musical accompaniment – a spectacle that is a must at every Franconian Kirchweih. The festival tent opens on Saturday, and on Sunday, the Kirchweih church service takes place, followed by the Kirchweih parade with horse-drawn carriages, traditional costume groups, and a brass band. Monday is traditionally the day for clubs and seniors – with games for children, coffee and cake in the afternoon, and a final dance evening in the festival tent.
The Kärwa boys and girls wear their Franconian traditional costumes, organize the dancing in the festival tent, and ensure that the customs remain alive. Typical Franconian tavern cuisine is served in the festival tent – bratwurst from a beechwood fire, Schäufele (pork shoulder), roast pork with dumplings, accompanied by hearty Franconian beer. The brass band plays polkas, waltzes, and modern hits, while a dance band takes over later in the evening.
Obernzenn is a market town in Central Franconia with around 2,500 inhabitants and several districts. In addition to the main town Kirchweih, other districts celebrate their own Kirchweihen throughout the year – including Egenhausen (end of August), Unteraltenbernheim (September), Rappenau/Straßenhof (September), Oberaltenbernheim (October), and Limbach (October). Overall, the series of Kirchweihen in the Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim district shapes the Franconian autumn – there is hardly a weekend without a celebration somewhere.
In 2026, the Kirchweih Obernzenn will again stick to the proven format: Friday, the traditional raising of the Kirchweih tree by the Kärwa boys, followed by the full program on the weekend with the festival tent, brass music, festival service, and Kirchweih parade. The Kärwa girls and boys wear their Franconian traditional costumes and lead the dances.
In the festival tent: Franconian tavern cuisine with bratwurst from a beechwood fire, Schäufele, roast pork, and hearty local beer. Sunday morning is dominated by the Kirchweih church service, and in the afternoon, the parade with traditional costume groups, horse-drawn carriages, and a brass band winds through the market town.
