Traditional Advent and handicraft market on the 1st Advent in Weidenberg in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth
Weidenberger Andreasmarkt has existed since the late 1980s. In 2026, the 37th edition will be celebrated – as the kick-off to the Advent season at the Rathausplatz in the Obermarkt. Compared to larger Upper Franconian Christmas markets (Bayreuth, Hof, Coburg), Weidenberg consciously remains small and curated: around twenty to thirty stalls, a mix of regional handicrafts and specialties from the market's four partner municipalities.
A special feature that distinguishes the Andreasmarkt from many other small Advent markets in the region: Weidenberg has maintained active town partnerships with four municipalities in four countries for years – South Tyrol (Italy), Brittany (France), the Czech Republic, and Poland. Participants from each of these partner municipalities travel to the Andreasmarkt and bring their culinary specialties: speck and wine from South Tyrol, galettes and crêpes from Brittany, Bohemian dumplings and slivovitz from the Czech Republic, bigos and pierogi from Poland.
The assortment is classically Advent market-oriented, with a regional focus: handmade crafts from the region around the Fichtelgebirge, honey from local beekeepers, books (often by local authors), jewelry, spices, Advent decorations. Accompanied by mulled wine, punch, bratwurst, and roasted almonds. The market takes place exclusively outdoors at the Rathausplatz – a warm hat and sturdy shoes are part of the equipment.
The market town of Weidenberg is located in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth, on the western edge of the Fichtelgebirge, on Federal Road 22 towards Marktredwitz. The municipal area is divided into numerous districts – the Andreasmarkt takes place in the historic Obermarkt at the Rathausplatz. The administrative community of Weidenberg has been a vibrant municipal center with active club and cultural life for decades.
The 2026 edition is confirmed by the official event directory of Markt Weidenberg: The Andreasmarkt traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of Advent – in 2026, this corresponds to November 29.
The opening traditionally takes place at 10:45 AM by the mayor or a representative of the market community, often accompanied by the local music association. The market will operate until approx. 6:00 PM; the stalls will then be dismantled.
