Sunday after the Kellernacht — Market town celebrates itself
Weidenberg's big summer event is actually a double feature: On the third Friday in July, the Kellernacht opens the historic Felsenkeller — and on the third Sunday, the Bürgerfest on the Obermarkt concludes the festival weekend. Both events are organized separately but are atmospherically linked.
The Obermarkt — Weidenberg's central square with its half-timbered facades, inns, and market church — forms the natural stage. On the Bürgerfest Sunday, the market streets are closed to traffic, local clubs set up stands, the business association presents itself, and the innkeepers put tables and chairs outside. Live music at various spots accompanies the day's activities.
A special feature of Weidenberg are the Felsenkeller: storage cellars carved into the sandstone of the hill, originally created in the early Middle Ages by the citizens of Weidenberg to store beer, fruit, and vegetables cool. Many of these cellars still exist today; some are opened for the Kellernacht. During the Bürgerfest on Sunday, the action takes place above ground — but the underground heritage is consciously recognized by all participants as a cultural hallmark.
The market town of Weidenberg is located on the western edge of the Fichtelgebirge, in the Landkreis Bayreuth (Upper Franconia). With just under 6,000 inhabitants, Weidenberg is too large for a mere village and too small for a city — a typical Bavarian market town with a high quality of life, active club scene, and a long history as a pilgrimage and craft center. The local brewery and several inns shape the social life.
Usually, the Bürgerfest Sunday begins with a morning pint (Frühschoppen), the market opens at midday, music groups perform in the afternoon, and the festival concludes in the evening with pub music. Club cafés, family games, craft demonstrations, and food from Weidenberg's inns round off the offerings.
The Weidenberg Bürgerfest 2026 directly follows the Kellernacht on Friday, July 17. While the Kellernacht fills the historic Felsenkeller under the market with medieval-inspired program points, the Bürgerfest on Sunday takes place above ground.
The Obermarkt — car-free and festively decorated — will be animated by a mix of clubs, traders, and restaurateurs. Families will find activities for children, adults meet neighbors and locals returning from Bayreuth and the surrounding area, and in the evening, bands play live music in front of the inns.
