About HanseKulturFestival

The HanseKulturFestival is Lübeck's largest city festival and one of the most important cultural events in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Every two years, one of the historic districts of the UNESCO World Heritage old town transforms into a vibrant cultural pathway with music, acrobatics, street art, workshops, regional cuisine, and a club mile. In 2026, the maritime quarter around St. Jakobi will be the venue. Friday 5–11 PM, Saturday 11 AM–11 PM, Sunday 11 AM–6 PM. Free admission.

Lübeck — the Hanseatic City and its Festival

Lübeck, a city with no district and former "Queen of the Hanseatic League," is now the sole UNESCO World Heritage site among the Hanseatic cities (UNESCO since 1987). Lübeck and Travemünde Marketing GmbH organizes the HanseKulturFestival every two years — a city festival that doesn't take place in the tourist center, but in one of the four historic districts of the old town. This way, Lübeck residents and visitors alternately discover different parts of the World Heritage city.

2026: The Maritime Quarter

In 2026, the maritime quarter around St. Jakobi Church will be the venue. The northern old town district — historically the quarter of Lübeck's sailors, with its narrow alleys and courtyards, the Schiffergesellschaft (Shipowners' Guild), and the Burgkloster — is one of the most atmospheric quarters in the city. The main axes of the festival are Große Burgstraße (main festival mile), Koberg (street art focus), Glockengießerstraße, and the area around the Hanseatic Museum (with a rooftop lounge).

Concept: The City as a Stage

The HanseKulturFestival is not a classic music festival with a main stage, but a decentralized city festival with distributed stages, show acts, and interactive stations:

  • Live music on several stages — Pop, Jazz, Folk, Classical, World Music
  • Street art and acrobatics — stilt walkers, mimes, walking acts
  • Workshops for children and adults
  • Regional cuisine — Lübeck marzipan stands, fish sandwiches, organic food stalls
  • Club mile — Lübeck cultural associations present themselves
  • Maritime market at the harbor with ship tours
  • Family activities at the Burgtor with face painting and games
  • Hanseatic Museum Rooftop Lounge with special program

Significance in Schleswig-Holstein's Festival Calendar

With over 100,000 visitors, the HanseKulturFestival is one of the most highly attended cultural events in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It competes in its target audience with Hamburg's Hafengeburtstag and Kieler Woche, but has a clearly cultural rather than maritime or folk festival character. The biennial frequency enhances the event's appeal — each edition is considered a "must-attend" for culture enthusiasts from all over the North.

HanseKulturFestival — edition 2026

The HanseKulturFestival 2026 runs from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 7 in the maritime quarter around St. Jakobi. Main axes: Große Burgstraße, Koberg, Glockengießerstraße, and the Hanseatic Museum. Music on several stages, street art, workshops, regional cuisine, and a club mile. Free admission. Opening hours: Fri 5–11 PM, Sat 11 AM–11 PM, Sun 11 AM–6 PM.

Maritime Quarter as New Venue

After the last editions in other old town districts, the festival moves to the maritime quarter in 2026 — historically the quarter of sailors and Lübeck shipowners, with the Schiffergesellschaft (now a restaurant), the former Burgkloster, and the late Gothic St. Jakobi Church as central structures. The narrow alleys and courtyards of the quarter create a special festival atmosphere, where locals and tourists mingle between concerts, workshops, and street art.

Program Highlights

  • Concerts on the main stage at Große Burgstraße — Pop, Jazz, Folk
  • Classical music at St. Jakobi and the nearby Marienkirche
  • Street art festival at Koberg with walking acts and acrobatics
  • Club mile on Große Burgstraße — Lübeck cultural associations
  • Hanseatic Museum with Rooftop Lounge and special program
  • Maritime market at the nearby harbor with ship tours
  • Family zone at Burgtor — face painting, workshops, interactive stations
  • Glockengießerstraße — workshops and readings in smaller courtyards
