Every two years, a historic district of Lübeck transforms into a cultural pathway
Lübeck, a city with no district and former "Queen of the Hanseatic League," is now the sole UNESCO World Heritage site among the Hanseatic cities (UNESCO since 1987). Lübeck and Travemünde Marketing GmbH organizes the HanseKulturFestival every two years — a city festival that doesn't take place in the tourist center, but in one of the four historic districts of the old town. This way, Lübeck residents and visitors alternately discover different parts of the World Heritage city.
In 2026, the maritime quarter around St. Jakobi Church will be the venue. The northern old town district — historically the quarter of Lübeck's sailors, with its narrow alleys and courtyards, the Schiffergesellschaft (Shipowners' Guild), and the Burgkloster — is one of the most atmospheric quarters in the city. The main axes of the festival are Große Burgstraße (main festival mile), Koberg (street art focus), Glockengießerstraße, and the area around the Hanseatic Museum (with a rooftop lounge).
The HanseKulturFestival is not a classic music festival with a main stage, but a decentralized city festival with distributed stages, show acts, and interactive stations:
With over 100,000 visitors, the HanseKulturFestival is one of the most highly attended cultural events in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It competes in its target audience with Hamburg's Hafengeburtstag and Kieler Woche, but has a clearly cultural rather than maritime or folk festival character. The biennial frequency enhances the event's appeal — each edition is considered a "must-attend" for culture enthusiasts from all over the North.
After the last editions in other old town districts, the festival moves to the maritime quarter in 2026 — historically the quarter of sailors and Lübeck shipowners, with the Schiffergesellschaft (now a restaurant), the former Burgkloster, and the late Gothic St. Jakobi Church as central structures. The narrow alleys and courtyards of the quarter create a special festival atmosphere, where locals and tourists mingle between concerts, workshops, and street art.
