Traditional district festival in Mainz-Ebersheim with beer tapping, ecumenical service, and club life
The Mainz district of Ebersheim is the southernmost of Mainz's 15 districts and is already located on the high plateau of the Rhenish-Hessian vineyard landscape. Until its incorporation into Mainz in 1969, it was an independent municipality, and Ebersheim has largely retained its village character: low-rise buildings, well-kept courtyards, visible vineyard landscapes in the background, and a lively club life.
The Ebersheimer Kerb is the traditional Kirchweih of the district and is organized by the Ebersheimer Kerbeverein — an independent organization that prepares the Kerb with detailed knowledge and volunteer commitment. The festival takes place over a September weekend and follows the classic Rhenish-Hessian Kerb tradition: four days from Friday to Monday.
Friday evening marks the ceremonial start. At 7:30 PM, the official beer tapping ceremony takes place, followed by the first live music of the weekend. Saturday begins at 3 PM with the all-day festival activities — club stands open, the stage program attracts regional bands and guests, and in the evening, the festival grounds fill with young adults and families.
Sunday has a special character. The morning is dedicated to the ecumenical service, a tradition that emphasizes the original ecclesiastical roots of the Kerb. This is followed by a Frühschoppen and an afternoon children's program with a bouncy castle, face painting, and small competitions. In the evening, the musical atmosphere returns. Monday concludes the festival with the classic Kerb finale — final stage concerts, cozy get-togethers at the beer stands, and the traditional closing of the Kerb barrel.
The Ebersheimer Kerb is one of those district festivals that make the sense of belonging to a district tangible in a large city like Mainz. Anyone who wants to get to know Ebersheim as a vibrant Rhenish-Hessian village community within the urban fabric of Mainz should come this weekend.
The 2026 program will be published by the Ebersheimer Kerbeverein in late summer on ebersheimer-kerbeverein.de. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: Friday evening ceremonial beer tapping at 7:30 PM with subsequent live music, Saturday full-day club and stage program from 3 PM onwards, Sunday with a church morning and family-oriented afternoon, Monday traditional finale. Mainz and Ebersheim clubs contribute stands and activities, and specialties from Mainz and Rhenish Hesse will be served.
