All-day dance floor on the Historic Market Square for May Day
In Germany, May 1st is traditionally dedicated to Maypoles, spring hikes, and folk festivals (Volksfeste). Homburg adds its own unique touch: With Tanz im Mai (Dance in May), the Historic Market Square of the university town in the Saarpfalz district becomes an all-day open-air dance floor from 10 AM to 8:30 PM. Free admission, a constant change of musical styles every half hour, and a twelve-meter-high Maibaum (Maypole) in the town's green and white colors as the centerpiece.
The choreography of the day is impressively versatile. Mornings (10 AM–12:30 PM): The 'Hellen Musikanten' open with brass music and a keg tapping ceremony. Early Afternoon (1 PM–2:45 PM): Folk dances by the 'Tanzgruppe Souvenir'. Afternoon (2 PM–4:30 PM): The Kareol Orchestra takes over with swing, foxtrot, and dance music from the 1920s — a highlight of the day for many older dancers. Late Afternoon (4:45 PM): The Tanzmanufaktur Limbach presents contemporary dance performances.
From 6 PM, Andreas Nagel & Band take the stage with classic rock and pop hits, followed by an ABBA Tribute concert. Until 8:30 PM, the market square transforms into an open dance stage — young people, families, seniors, and students from the university town mingle.
Traditionally, a twelve-meter-high Maibaum in Homburg's green and white town colors is erected in the center of the market square. Decorated with crests and ribbons, it serves as a focal point for the all-day event and will remain on the market square in the following weeks.
Local restaurateurs and stalls provide food and drinks: grilled chicken, bratwurst, steaks, coffee and cake, and beverages of all kinds. Those needing a break from dancing can relax in one of the cafés in the old town.
Tanz im Mai is part of the Homburg Summer of Music, a series of events organized by the city and the Homburg Old Town Interest Group e.V., which fills the city center with live music from spring to summer. Thus, May Day in Homburg marks both the season's opening and one of the highlights of the cultural calendar in the Saarpfalz district.
The all-day event is an official part of the Homburg Summer of Music 2026 program. Organizers, the Homburg Old Town Interest Group and the City of Homburg, are once again relying on the stylistic diversity from brass music to ABBA tribute.
Free admission. Food and drinks available at market stalls and in old town cafés.
