Four city center squares, 67 stalls, 20-meter Nordmann fir tree with 13,500 LEDs
The Darmstadt Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful Advent markets in Southern Hesse. In 2026, it runs from November 17 to December 23 in Darmstadt's city center, spread across four central squares: Friedensplatz, Marktplatz, Luisenplatz, and Ludwigsplatz. A total of 67 stalls offer mulled wine, gingerbread, bratwurst, potato pancakes, as well as regional handicrafts and Christmas decorations.
The visual highlight is the 20-meter-high Nordmann fir tree on the Marktplatz, adorned with 13,500 LED lights. Starting at 6 PM, an light animation runs every full hour – a choreographed show that illuminates the tree to music and is one of the market's main attractions. The "Lange Ludwig" (the Ludwig Monument on Luisenplatz) is also illuminated with 30,000 LEDs.
On Friedensplatz, there is a historic horse carousel – one of the oldest still operating fairground carousels, adding a touch of nostalgic atmosphere to the market. Adjacent to it, there are children's carousels and a miniature railway for the youngest visitors.
A unique Darmstadt tradition is the Mulled Wine Princess: Since 2011, a young woman from Darmstadt is chosen annually to open the market and present the new mulled wine glass design. The Mulled Wine Princess serves as an ambassador for the market and attends numerous events during the Advent season.
A special feature that gives the market an international flair: Stalls from Darmstadt's partner cities offer regional specialties, such as Hungarian Lángos or Swiss wine and cheese. This distinguishes the Darmstadt market from typical regional Hessian Christmas markets.
With around 160,000 inhabitants, Darmstadt is the fifth-largest city in Hesse and officially bears the epithet "City of Science" – due to the TU Darmstadt, the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, the GSI Helmholtz Centre (with its heavy ion accelerator), the ESA ground station, and many research institutes. The Mathildenhöhe (UNESCO World Heritage site, Art Nouveau) and the Castle shape the cityscape. The Christmas market is the social heart of the city during Advent.
A classic Advent market focusing on four city center squares. The central Nordmann fir tree and light installations are the visual signature – combined with the annually crowned Mulled Wine Princess and her public appearances.
