30 Wine Stalls on Wilhelminenstraße — Bergstraße, Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Pfalz and Nahe
Darmstadt is geographically located at the center of five major German wine regions: Hessische Bergstraße directly to the south, Rheinhessen and Rheingau to the west, Pfalz and Nahe further southwest. This location makes the Darmstadt Wine Festival possible — and very diverse: at the stalls, visitors encounter wines from five growing regions side by side, with different characters and styles.
The venue is Wilhelminenstraße in the middle of Darmstadt's city center — an elegant street between Luisenplatz and Marktplatz, in front of the castle. Over 30 wine and gastronomy stalls line the entire street, with vintners serving themselves. In the upper section, in front of L'Osteria, there is space for additional stalls.
The Darmstadt Wine Festival focuses on quality and diversity: many family-run wineries, plus organic winegrowers and vintners who cultivate rare grape varieties. It is therefore less of a Schlager festival and more of a wine salon — a city festival that also offers substance for wine connoisseurs.
A special feature: On Sundays, the city center shops are open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Those who want to shop and taste wine can combine both — Darmstadt's city program and the wine festival are closely intertwined.
Tradition: The Darmstadt Wine Festival always takes place on the first weekend of September. In 2026, this is from Thursday to Sunday. Thursday to Saturday from 12 p.m. noon to midnight, Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Four days of gourmet mile in the city center. Wilhelminenstraße becomes a wine street from Luisenplatz towards the castle — with stalls, tables, live background music, and a great mix of wine expertise and city festival atmosphere.
Free admission. Wine schoppen usually 3–5 € per glass, depending on the vintner and wine. Gastronomy at the stalls is separate.
From Darmstadt main station, take tram 3 or bus to Luisenplatz, then a few steps to Wilhelminenstraße.
Free. Wine tasting and refreshments at the stalls are separate. Usual prices for a glass of wine (schoppen) (3–5 € per glass).
Start Sunday morning in the Schlossgarten (Palace Garden), then stroll through Wilhelminenstraße with a wine stop, followed by Sunday shopping — a perfect city Sunday.
