Germany's most diverse city centre festival – 76th edition in summer 2026
For generations, "Heiner" has been the nickname for the people of Darmstadt – and their festival, the Heinerfest, has been running since 1951. What began as a small city festival during Darmstadt's reconstruction has developed into Germany's most diverse city centre festival: almost 150 free cultural events, five festival days, three large festival grounds – and around 500,000 visitors in the city centre of the Hessian science city.
Unlike many city festivals, the Heinerfest is not concentrated on a single square. Marktplatz, Friedensplatz, Karolinenplatz, and Mercksplatz all serve as festival grounds simultaneously – with their own stages, showmen, food, and drink stalls. This makes the 76th edition in 2026 (July 2nd to 6th) a city centre festival that is truly spread out and can be explored for half a day without seeing the same stall twice.
The programme ranges from live bands and cover bands to theatre, dance, interactive activities, open-air concerts, readings, and cabaret – almost all with free admission. Heinerfest Darmstadt e.V. places great importance on the festival also being a cultural festival and not just a funfair.
For those seeking adrenaline: The Heinerfest is considered one of the most important venues for the German showman scene. Confirmed for 2026 are, among others, the 55-meter Giant Ferris Wheel (Willenborg), Excalibur (H.P.E. Bruch), Looping the Loop (Loritz), the classic Break Dancer (Schramm), Predator (Kaiser), Gravity Tower, and Dr. Archibald Barth. Thus, Darmstadt combines classic chain carousel feelings with high-tech roller coasters.
The Heinerfest concludes every year with spectacular closing fireworks on Monday evening – thousands gather on the festival grounds and the surrounding hills. A fitting end to the five festival days.
From Thursday, July 2nd, to Monday, July 6th, 2026, the Heinerfest will take place throughout Darmstadt's city centre. Marktplatz, Friedensplatz, Karolinenplatz, and Mercksplatz will all serve as festival grounds simultaneously, with their own stages and showman operations.
Note: The complete stage programme with all bands and cultural events will be published shortly before the festival begins at heinerfest.de.
