District Kirchweih in Nuremberg South with a parade in front of the Franken-Center
Langwasser in southern Nuremberg, with around 40,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest districts in the Franconian metropolis – a multi-layered residential area that was built up in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, it is a colorful, mixed neighborhood with modern high-rise buildings, small row house settlements, extensive green spaces, and the Franken-Center – one of the oldest and largest shopping centers in Franconia.
Nuremberg has cultivated a dense network of district Kirchweihen for generations: from spring to autumn, a different district celebrates its own Kirchweih every weekend. The Langwasser Kirchweih is one of the major ones – it attracts families from all over southern Nuremberg, from Reichelsdorf, Eibach, Gartenstadt, and Hasenbuck, as well as from the neighboring communities of Schwabach and Wendelstein.
The venue is the Langwasser-Süd festival grounds at Glogauer Straße 140 – a large festival meadow on the southern edge of the district. Here, Nuremberg showmen set up their carousels, roller coasters, bumper cars, and stalls, a festival tent is erected, and Franconian innkeepers provide Maßkrug (liter mugs), sausages, grilled fish, and gingerbread.
The undisputed highlight is the parade on Sunday: brass bands, floats, festival clubs, and showmen families march from the district center past the Franken-Center to the festival grounds. Thousands of people line the streets, Franconian club banners and traditional costumes color the scene; at the front of the parade rides the festival innkeeper's family and the Beer Queen. A picture of genuine Franconian civic life, in the middle of a modern district.
The Nuremberg City Tourism Office lists the Langwasser Kirchweih in its district Kirchweih calendar for the first days of August 2026 — from August 7 to 10. Venue: Langwasser-Süd festival grounds, Glogauer Straße 140.
As in previous years, Franconian dance bands will alternate over the four days, with a party band on Saturday evening and a festival band on Sunday for the morning pint. The exact bands and daily specials will be announced by the showmen families and the festival host about two weeks before the event in the district gazette and on nuernberg.de.
Specific band names and daily specials will be available via nuernberg.de and posters in the district.
Free admission to the festival grounds. Carousel rides and showman stalls at respective daily prices. Free seating in the festival tent, food and drinks at festival prices.
By subway: Take line U1 to Langwasser-Süd, then about a 5-minute walk to the festival grounds. By car: Take the A9 highway, exit Nuremberg-Fischbach, then follow Münchner Straße towards Langwasser. Parking is available around the festival grounds.
Langwasser-Süd festival grounds, Glogauer Straße 140, 90473 Nuremberg. Food and drinks available in the festival tent and at outdoor stalls. Cash payment at the stalls; the festival tent partially accepts card payments.
Wednesday and Thursday are usually family days with discounted rides – ideal for a relaxed family visit without the weekend crowds.
