District Kirchweih in Nuremberg's Southeast with Beer Tapping and Rides
Altenfurt is a district in the southeast of Nuremberg, about 8 km from the city center, on the edge of the Sebalder Reichswald forest. What was once an independent farming village is now part of the city of Nuremberg — but it has largely retained its village character. Hermann-Kolb-Straße is the central axis of the district, and the festival grounds at house number 55 are the focal point of club life and, above all, the annual Kirchweih.
Nuremberg is one of the cities with the most Kirchweihen in Germany. Between the end of April and the end of September, around 40 districts celebrate their own Kärwa. The Kirchweih Altenfurt is one of the traditional summer Kirchweihen — usually in mid-July, with a classic format from Friday to Tuesday. The district Kirchweihen are organized by the Nuremberg City Property Department, in close cooperation with local clubs and showmen.
The program of the Altenfurter Kärwa has followed a similar schedule for decades: Friday opening evening with beer tapping, then festival operations on the weekend with live music in the festival tent on Saturday, family day on Sunday with a family program and carousels, Kärwa Monday with club and senior program, and the festival conclusion on Tuesday. Amusement rides (chain carousel, Ferris wheel of a smaller design, bumper cars, children's carousels), food stalls with Franconian sausages, "Steckerlfisch" (fish on a stick), gingerbread, almonds, and of course the festival beer from the tap from Nuremberg's major breweries.
Like many Nuremberg district Kärwas, the Altenfurter Kärwa is traditionally a meeting point for local clubs and political local associations. SPD, CSU, Freie Wähler (Free Voters), and citizens' initiatives maintain club tents and information stands — a piece of local democracy and club hospitality. The beer tapping on Friday is usually a social event attended by the district mayor's office and local politicians.
The Altenfurter Kärwa 2026 starts on Friday, July 10th, with the traditional beer tapping in the early evening. Local politicians and club representatives will be present, the first barrel will be tapped, and the festival operations with carousels, festival tent, and food stalls will begin.
On the weekend of July 11–12, festival operations run all day with live music in the festival tent on Saturday evening and a family day on Sunday. Kärwa Monday, July 13th, features club and senior programs, and the festival conclusion on Tuesday, July 14th, ends the event with a Kärwa finale in the festival tent.
The detailed daily program will be announced in advance by the Nuremberg City Property Department and on the Facebook event page. An overview of all Nuremberg district Kirchweihen in 2026 can be found at nuernberg.de.
Altenfurt is located in the southeast of Nuremberg. Take the U-Bahn (subway) U2 or U21 to Altenfurt, or bus line 49 from the main train station. From Altenfurt station to Hermann-Kolb-Straße 55 is about a 7-10 minute walk. By car, take the A6 (exit Nuremberg-Altenfurt) or the B14. Parking is available on adjacent streets.
Admission to the festival grounds and festival tent is free. Amusement rides and food stalls are priced as at a Volksfest, and food and drinks in the festival tent are at usual prices. Individual live concert evenings may require separate tickets (details shortly before the festival).
Friday evening (beer tapping) and Sunday afternoon (family day) are the most popular times. If you prefer a more relaxed celebration: Tuesday evening (festival conclusion) is quieter, and the festival tent is then mostly occupied by regulars. Ideal for children: Sunday afternoon with carousel discounts.
