A Franconian Kirchweih with History

The Brunner Kirchweih is one of the traditional Franconian Kirchweihen in the greater Nuremberg area. It is celebrated in the district of Brunn, which is considered the highest point in the city of Nuremberg. The rural district proudly maintains its customs and independence, which regularly attracts high-ranking politicians like Minister President Markus Söder to Brunn.

Organization and Schedule

The organizers are SV Brunn and the Bürgerverein Nürnberg-Brunn e.V., supported by numerous volunteers from the district. The Kirchweih takes place around Brunner Hauptstraße. The festival program classically extends over the entire last weekend of July – Friday to Sunday – and continues on the following Wednesday.

Customs and Program

Typical program items of a Franconian Kirchweih include the beer tapping ceremony, a parade, dancing under the Kirchweihbaum (Maypole), performances by regional bands, and the 'Austanzen', where the Kirchweih couple is crowned. The football department of the fire brigade traditionally hosts the Friday evening event. Since 2015, a cultural festival on the Tuesday after the Kirchweih, under the motto »Wer ko der därf« (Who can, may), has complemented the traditional program.

Brunn in Southern Nuremberg

Brunn is a statistical district and part of the city in the south or southeast of Nuremberg, in the state of Bavaria. The village has a distinct rural character and is considered a place of regional importance for vibrant customs within a large city. The Brunner Kirchweih is part of the dense calendar of Kirchweihen in and around Nuremberg.

Who Should Visit?

The Brunner Kirchweih appeals to everyone who wants to experience Franconian customs up close: families, Kirchweih fans from the entire region, visitors to Nuremberg looking for an authentic district festival beyond the city center, and friends of bratwurst, beer, and unpretentious conviviality.
