Traditional St. Nicholas Market on the 1st Advent weekend in the Oberbreisig district above Bad Breisig
Oberbreisig is one of the districts of the town of Bad Breisig and is located on a slope above the Rhine riverbank. With its own parish church, its own associations, and an active local community, the district maintains its independent identity. The village center, with the rectory, the shooting club house, and a few small shops, forms the social heart.
In 2026, the Nikolausmarkt will take place on November 28th and 29th – on the 1st Advent weekend – making it one of the first Christmas markets of the season in the region. This early date fits the market's name, as Saint Nicholas of Myra is traditionally celebrated on December 6th and is a central figure in Catholic customs during the pre-Christmas period.
Local associations, hobby artists, and small vendors gather at the market with their wooden stalls. Advent decorations, candles, handmade toys, pottery, knitwear, and small gift items are offered. Mulled wine, children's punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, and sweet specialties like cookies and stollen provide culinary accompaniment.
Saint Nicholas traditionally visits the market with his sack full of gifts for the children. Families with children specifically come for this highlight, which often takes place on Saturday afternoon. Advent music from brass choirs, trombone choirs, or school choirs shapes the musical atmosphere.
In contrast to the large Christmas markets in the region – such as in Bonn, Koblenz, or the nearby Linz am Rhein – the Oberbreisig Nikolausmarkt cultivates a deliberately village-like atmosphere. The personal encounters between vendors and visitors, the manageable size, and the close connection to local club life make the market a cherished Advent experience for those seeking the tranquility and authenticity of a small village market.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/autumn. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Opening of the Nikolausmarkt by the organizing community. The wooden stalls, catering stands, and stage are set up by late morning. Visitors stroll through the stalls, taste mulled wine and bratwurst, and buy small gifts and Advent decorations. Advent music plays from speakers or possibly from a brass ensemble.
The highlight of the day is the visit of Saint Nicholas, who receives the children at the market with his sack full of gifts. Parents and grandparents accompany the children for this special encounter, where gifts are presented after reciting poems or singing songs.
Atmospheric evening ambiance with illuminated stalls, Advent music, and convivial gatherings at the mulled wine stand. The market closes late in the evening.
Morning pint and catering in the morning. Lunch service with warm dishes at midday. Coffee and cake in the afternoon, possibly another performance by a brass ensemble or school choir. In the evening, the market winds down, with dismantling late in the evening or on Monday.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published shortly before the date on the market website nikolausmarkt-oberbreisig.jimdofree.com.
