Neighbourhood festival in Bochum-Langendreer for peace, solidarity, and district democracy — dance, music, children's programme
The Festival for Peace in Langendreer is not a traditional Volksfest (popular festival), but a deliberately political and neighbourly event. On June 26, 2026, from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM, the neighbourhood community in the eastern part of Bochum will gather around the St. Marien church site (Alte Bahnhofstr. 182, 44892 Bochum-Langendreer) — with the explicit goal of setting a sign for peace and solidarity in times of increasing violence and social division.
The format is deliberately accessible and open:
Behind the festival is the registered association "Langendreer hat's!" e.V., which connects local citizens, business people, and committed residents of Langendreer. The association has been working for years to revitalise the district — with neighbourhood cafés, festivals, cultural events, and social projects. The Peace Festival in 2026 is one of its most ambitious formats.
Langendreer is one of the easternmost districts of Bochum, with its own S-Bahn connection, a historically shaped town centre, and a strong identity. Over 35,000 people live here — long-established mining families, newly arrived students, and a very active migrant community. This diversity makes a Peace Festival in Langendreer particularly significant: it is not just a symbol, but a genuine encounter between population groups who often live parallel lives in everyday life.
Bochum as a whole has transformed in recent decades from a mining and industrial location to a university and creative city. Festivals like the Langendreer Peace Festival show that this transformation also has a neighbourhood level — and that the cultural diversity of the districts is a value that neighbourhood festivals make visible and celebrate.
