Parish Festival on the Outskirts of the Ruhr Area

The Community Festival of the Evangelical Parish Langendreer is one of those events that shape urban life in the Bochum districts: not a tourist spectacle, but an authentic parish festival that brings the neighborhood together. Langendreer is the easternmost district of Bochum (Ruhr Area, North Rhine-Westphalia, City of Bochum with around 360,000 inhabitants), historically shaped by mining and railway junctions. Today, the community festival is one of the highlights in the summer calendar of the Evangelical parish.

Around the Michaelkirche

The venue is the Michaelkirche Langendreer and the surrounding community center. The Michaelkirche is one of the central Evangelical churches in eastern Bochum and the seat of the parish, which cultivates a lively community life – with kindergarten, confirmation classes, diaconal work, and various groups. On the festival weekend, the church grounds are transformed into a festival meadow with marquees, a festival tent, barbecue, and children's area.

Program for Families

The children's program is the main focus. A bouncy castle for the little ones, face painting with animal and hero motifs, stick bread at the campfire, and various hands-on games keep the children entertained. The confirmation group traditionally takes over parts of the program, manages game stations, and collects money for their confirmation trip. The family-oriented nature makes the festival particularly attractive for young families – even though most visitors come classically from the neighborhood parish district.

Culinary Delights: Bochum Parish Festival Classics

Culinary expectations include what belongs to a parish festival: barbecue station with sausages and meatballs, fries from the deep fryer, coffee and homemade cakes from the parish's baking group, cold drinks, perhaps a Pils from the Bochum brewery Moritz Fiege. The proceeds go to the community and diaconal work of the parish – from the visiting service for the sick to youth work.

Langendreer and Eastern Bochum

The district of Langendreer has a special history: it is home to the Bahnhof Langendreer – one of the most renowned socio-cultural centers in North Rhine-Westphalia, located in the station building with a cinema, concerts, readings, and political events. The district is multicultural, has a vibrant club life, and the residents have a strong identification with their "Veedel" (neighborhood). The community festival reflects this local connection.

Community Engagement in the Ruhr Area

The community festival is not just a summer celebration, but also a showcase of community activities: confirmation group, children's service, women's circle, senior activities, youth group – they all present their work, recruit new members, and network with neighbors. The Evangelical Church in Bochum belongs to the Evangelical Church District Bochum, one of the largest church districts of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.
