About Bürgerwoche Bochum-Ost

From June 10th to 16th, 2026, the Bürgerwoche Bochum-Ost will celebrate its 50th anniversary with its 47th edition. For a week, Volkspark Langendreer, Lahariplatz in Laer, and Marktplatz Werne will transform into stages for clubs, schools, church communities, and local artists — under the motto 'Citizens meet each other — we participate'. Organized by the district representation Bochum-Ost and Bochum Marketing GmbH, the Bürgerwoche is one of the oldest district festivals in the Ruhr area and offers free admission. A commemorative photo book is also planned for the anniversary.

50 Years of Bürgerwoche Bochum-Ost

Few district festivals in Germany can look back on such a long tradition: Since 1976, Bochum's East has invited everyone to a whole week of community events every year. The 47th edition from June 10th to 16th, 2026, coincides with the 50th anniversary — a double occasion for the already close network of clubs, schools, church communities, and initiatives to showcase themselves in full breadth. The motto 'Citizens meet each other — we participate' is the program: The Bürgerwoche is a participatory festival, not a consumer event.

Three Venues, Three Bochum Districts

Unlike classic district festivals, the Bürgerwoche Bochum-Ost is spread across three venues in three districts: the Volkspark Langendreer as the central festival grounds, the Lahariplatz in Laer as a smaller district focus, and the Marktplatz Werne as a third anchor. This means the Bürgerwoche is literally anchored across the entire Bochum-Ost district — a concept that has remained unchanged for 50 years and shapes the identity of the festival.

Program: Clubs, Stages, Schools, Initiatives

Over six days, sports clubs, music associations, schools, parish communities, social welfare organizations, and district initiatives present themselves with their own stands, stage programs, and hands-on activities. Choirs, dance groups, school bands, and local artists alternate on the stages. For children, there are daily craft activities, game courses, and sports offerings; for adults, gastronomic options from clubs and initiatives. The festival is deliberately organized non-commercially — the local clubs bear the costs for their stands themselves.

Photo Book for the Anniversary

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, the organizers are planning a photo book, according to the Bochum-Journal, documenting the history of the Bürgerwoche since 1976. This will be the first time in its history that the Bürgerwoche is honored with its own publication — a significant step for a district festival that has primarily defined itself through living community spirit.

Organizers: District Representation Ost & Bochum Marketing

The Bürgerwoche is organized by the district representation of the Bochum-Ost district in cooperation with Bochum Marketing GmbH. The financial framework is covered by municipal funds, sponsorship, and stand fees — the festival itself remains free for visitors.

Bochum-Ost in the Ruhr Area

The Bochum-Ost district includes the neighborhoods of Langendreer, Laer, Werne, Gerthe, and others in the eastern part of the city — a mosaic of miners' settlements, Wilhelminian-era quarters, high-rise areas, and typical Ruhr area district culture. The Bürgerwoche reflects precisely this social diversity — and has been the most visible symbol since 1976 that neighborhood is still a top priority in Bochum's East.

Bürgerwoche Bochum-Ost — edition 2026

The 47th Bürgerwoche Bochum-Ost in 2026 coincides with the 50th anniversary. From Wednesday, June 10th to Tuesday, June 16th, 2026, programs will be spread across Volkspark Langendreer, Lahariplatz Laer, and Marktplatz Werne. Motto: 'Citizens meet each other — we participate'. A photo book on the 50-year history is planned. Free admission.

Bürgerwoche 2026 — Double Anniversary

The 2026 edition is not only the 47th occurrence in 50 years but also a year full of references: The festival committee plans a photo book documenting the history of the festival since 1976. For a week, the stages in Volkspark Langendreer, at Lahariplatz Laer, and at Marktplatz Werne will be open to local clubs, schools, choirs, and initiatives.

Three Districts, One Week

Program items are distributed across all three venues in Bochum's East. The district representation Bochum-Ost and Bochum Marketing GmbH coordinate the overall program together with over 100 clubs and initiatives.
