38 days of Christmas market with ice rink on the Heide market square
Heide, with around 22,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the Dithmarschen district and the cultural center of the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. The spacious Heide market square — one of the largest undeveloped market squares in Germany — is the venue for many city festivals and, from mid-November, the stage for the traditional Heider Winterwelt. The backdrop of the Gothic St. Jürgen Church in the background gives the market a very North German, almost Scandinavian charm.
With its 38 event days, the Heider Winterwelt is one of the longest Christmas markets in Schleswig-Holstein. Unlike shorter Advent markets, it covers almost the entire period from mid-November until just before Christmas — from November 16th to December 23rd, 2026. The concept focuses on long-term experience quality rather than hectic mass tourism: cozy wooden huts, a well-thought-out rotating assortment, and the central ice rink as an anchor.
The centerpiece of the Winterwelt is a 600 m² covered ice rink. Unlike pure ice skating areas, the Stadtwerke-Heide-Eisstock-Cup also takes place here: up to 160 teams compete for the challenge cup over the event period. Eisstockschießen (ice stock sport) — a Bavarian-Alpine tradition — has had a surprisingly active following in Heide for years. Those who don't have their own team can register for open tournament evenings.
The Heider Winterwelt attracts a wide catchment area: visitors come from Brunsbüttel, Meldorf, Itzehoe, Husum, and even from southern Denmark. The event is organized by Heide Stadtmarketing and supported by Stadtwerke Heide, Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken, and local business associations — a typical example of a high-quality North German location initiative.
From November 16th to December 23rd, 2026, the Heider Winterwelt will once again transform the large Heide market square into a winter village. For 38 days, there will be mulled wine, bratwurst, and potato pancakes, arts and crafts, and a rotating selection of gifts from Northern Germany. The backdrop: the Gothic St. Jürgen Church.
The highlight is again the covered 600 m² ice rink with the Stadtwerke-Heide-Eisstock-Cup, in which up to 160 teams participate. In addition, a stage program with regional choirs and bands, visits from St. Nicholas, and an Advent offering that covers all four Advent weekends.

Heide is accessible by train (Heide station, Hamburg–Westerland line) and by car via the A23 (Heide-Süd or Heide-West exit). It is a 10-minute walk from the train station to the market square.
Admission to the Winterwelt is free. Ice rink access (skate rental and ice stock sport) is subject to a fee.
Daily from November 16th to December 23rd, 2026; opening hours available on heide-stadtmarketing.de.
Weatherproof clothing recommended — West Coast winters are windy and wet. Food and drinks available at the market stalls.
