Germany's Largest Undeveloped Market Square
The Heider Marktplatz, with an area of approximately 5 hectares, is the largest undeveloped market square in Germany. This extraordinary expanse — free and open in the very centre of the town — makes every market day a special experience. The Spring and Flower Market uses this space to stage a themed event that gives a face to the start of the season in Dithmarschen.
What's on Offer
The exhibitors showcase the best the region and the North have to offer:
- Florists and nurseries from Schleswig-Holstein offering perennials, spring bulbs, herbs, and seedlings for your garden
- Crafts related to gardens and spring: ceramics, woodwork, floristry accessories, decorations
- Regional producers with culinary specialities — from honey and jams to cheese and baked goods
- Catering with coffee specialities, bratwurst, crêpes, and light meals
The stalls stretch from the Böttcher-Rondell on the south side of the market to the Südermarkt, utilising the entire central market area.
Sunday Shopping in the Town Centre
From 12 PM, many Heide shops open their doors for Sunday shopping. This allows you to elegantly combine your market visit with a stroll through the town centre. Cafés and restaurants in the vicinity are open as usual — a pleasant day trip for families from all over Dithmarschen and beyond the district borders.
Who's Behind It?
The event is organised by the Wirtschafts- und Gewerbeverein Heide (Heide Business and Trade Association) in cooperation with Heide Stadtmarketing GmbH. Both organisations host a variety of market and town festival formats throughout the year, from spring and autumn markets to the Heide Market Beach in summer. The Spring and Flower Market kicks off the open-air market season in Heide.
Heide in the Dithmarschen District
Heide is the district town of Dithmarschen — the northern half of the region between the Eider and Elbe rivers. The region is known for its marshland and cabbage fields, the Wadden Sea, and a distinct identity that is still evident today in folk festivals like the Dithmarscher Kohltage (Dithmarschen Cabbage Days). The Spring Market is, in a way, the prelude, the town's celebration with the weather god.
