Franconian Kerwa in two districts of the market town of Marktleugast
A special feature of the Kerwa Traindorf and Tannenwirtshaus is its double structure: both districts of the market town of Marktleugast celebrate their Kirchweih not separately, but together – an expression of the close connection between the two small villages and the practical pooling of organizational resources. The market town of Marktleugast in the Upper Franconian district of Kulmbach consists of the main town and several districts; Traindorf and Tannenwirtshaus are located not far from each other on the slope of the Frankenwald forest.
The date is traditionally the first or second weekend in September – the exact days depend on the patron saint of the respective parish. Over three to four days, a program with classic elements of local customs takes place: festive church service on Sunday, festival operations with Franconian specialties (Schäuferla, Bratwürste, Krautsalat, Frankenbier) and dance events with live music or DJ on Saturday evening.
The Kerwa follows the rules of Franconian Kirchweih culture: young men and women of the village take on the task of erecting the maypole (Baumaufstellen), the festival tent is set up collectively, and catering is provided by volunteer helpers from local clubs. The festival is financed by the catering operations – a model that has been working in the Upper Franconian villages for generations.
The market town of Marktleugast is located in the southwestern district of Kulmbach, at the transition between Franconian Switzerland and the Frankenwald. With just under 3,000 inhabitants spread across several districts, the market town is manageable, but its landscape with mixed forests and rolling hills is attractive for tourism. Tannenwirtshaus has always been a small resting place at the transition between the valleys – the name reveals its original function as an inn on the connecting road.
The 2026 Kerwa in Traindorf and Tannenwirtshaus will follow the traditional structure. The exact program breakdown – which program items take place in which district – will be published shortly before the festival on the municipal website or in the newsletter of the market town of Marktleugast.
As with all Upper Franconian village Kerwas, the clubs and young men take over the festival setup and catering. Guests from neighboring communities in the Kulmbach district and from the Frankenwald are welcome.
