5th Spring Market along the Rhine Embankment Promenade from Hohenzollern Bridge to Machabäerstraße
When in Cologne May turns the Rhine promenade into the liveliest spot in the city, the Spring Festival on the Rhine Embankment Promenade arrives: From May 14th to 17th, 2026, market stalls, food trucks, wine stands, and a beer garden will line up along the Rhine Embankment Promenade — from the foot of the Hohenzollern Bridge to Machabäerstraße. This is the 5th edition since the format was introduced in the early 2020s.
The festival mile stretches for almost a kilometer along the Rhine: From the foot of the Hohenzollern Bridge (opposite the Cathedral and Main Station) to Machabäerstraße near the Severins Bridge. This location is the festival's unique selling point: market stroll with direct Rhine views, the Cathedral always in the background, Rhine ships passing by. A backdrop contrast that no other Cologne market can offer.
The exhibitors offer a balanced mix of regional crafts, design, and sustainable gastronomy:
The opening hours are adapted to the four different days of the week:
The Rhine Embankment Promenade is one of the most important urban development projects in Cologne's city center in recent decades. After years of discussions about traffic management, inner-city car traffic was moved under the promenade — a green, pedestrian-friendly waterfront with cafés, bars, and park areas was created on a tunnel structure. The promenade now connects the Old Town with the Rheinauhafen and is a daily living space for thousands of Cologne residents and tourists.
The independent city of Cologne, with its approximately 1.1 million inhabitants, is Germany's fourth-largest city and the economic, cultural, and media center of the Rhineland. Known for the Cologne Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Carnival, the Chocolate Museum, the Lanxess Arena, RheinEnergieStadion (1. FC Köln), Cologne Carnival, and a strong creative and media industry (RTL, WDR, Constantin Film). There are numerous spring markets in the city — the Rhine Embankment Promenade version is arguably the one with the most spectacular backdrop.
The 5th edition of the Rhine Embankment Promenade Spring Festival spans four days along Cologne's waterfront. Exhibitors featuring crafts, goldsmiths, design, and sustainable street food line up from Hohenzollern Bridge to Machabäerstraße. Direct Rhine views, the Cathedral in the background, Rhine ships passing by — one of the most atmospherically spectacular spring market settings in Germany.
Approximately 1 km along the Rhine Embankment Promenade from Hohenzollern Bridge to Machabäerstraße (near Severins Bridge).
Free admission. Market goods, food, and drinks at the exhibitors' daily prices. Kölsch in the beer garden at regular Cologne prices.
By train: Köln Hauptbahnhof (Main Station), approx. 5 min. walk to Hohenzollern Bridge and thus to the start of the festival. By KVB city rail: Lines 1, 5, 7, 9 to Heumarkt or Dom/Hauptbahnhof. Impractical by car — parking garages at Heumarkt or Rheinauhafen, but the city center is crowded, especially on weekends.
Free admission. Market goods, food, and drinks at the exhibitors' daily prices.
Thursday evening is probably the most relaxed time — fewer tourists, good café tables by the Rhine available. Saturday evening during the golden hour (sunset over the Rhine, illuminated Cathedral) is the most Instagrammable time. Those who drink Kölsch should head to the beer garden right by the water.
