A Franconian Village Kerwa
The Kerwa in Birk is the Kirchweih of the small district of Birk in the municipality of Emtmannsberg, southeast of Bayreuth. The "Kerwa" – the dialect form of Kirchweih – is one of the most important village festivals of the year in the Franconian region and is celebrated in Birk with great commitment from the local community.
Kerwa Customs
The multi-day festival follows the classic Franconian Kerwa schedule: Friday evening begins with Krenfleisch (horseradish meat) and other Kerwa specialties, Saturday evening features the Aufspielen der Kerwabuam (playing of music by the Kerwabuam) with traditional music. Kerwa Sunday is dedicated to the festive church service, a Weißwurst breakfast, a communal lunch, and coffee and cake in the afternoon.
Community in the Hamlet
The Kerwa thrives on the cohesion of the small local community. It brings together locals, former residents of Birk, and guests from the surrounding area – an authentic piece of Franconian festival culture away from the big folk festivals.
Emtmannsberg in the Bayreuth Region
Emtmannsberg is scenically located southeast of Bayreuth. In addition to the Kerwa in Birk, the municipality maintains other Kirchweih and festival traditions, such as the Kirchweih in Schamelsberg and the Drei-Tannen-Fest – the Kerwa Birk is a firm summer component of this festival calendar.
