Annual foundation festival in the baroque castle complex
Schloss Schreez in the Unternschreez district of the Upper Franconian municipality of Haag is one of the most important margravial castles in the baroque Bayreuth Heritage Area. The complex dates back to a medieval castle (»Veste Schreez«), and the current baroque building features elements from the 16th century. The castle is considered the largest architectural landmark of the municipality of Haag.
The owner and patron of the castle is the Dr.-Alfred-Denig Foundation, founded after the death of Dr. Alfred Denig in 2005. The foundation's goal is to preserve the castle as a historical monument and make it accessible to the public. It organizes concerts, cultural programs, weddings, and the festive Stiftungsfest once a year.
The Stiftungsfest offers the foundation an opportunity to present its work to a wider audience. The program combines classical music, small cultural contributions (readings, lectures), and upscale catering. Depending on the weather, the venues are the castle courtyard, the castle park, the Golden Hall, the Fireplace Room, or the Armoury.
Schloss Schreez is open to visitors on Sundays from May to September between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Since April 2024, civil weddings have also been taking place at the castle – an indication of the growing cultural use of the building.
Haag is located in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth and belongs to the Margravial region around Bayreuth, which cultivates its own heritage of the former Hohenzollern line with its baroque castles and hunting lodges. Schloss Schreez is one of the best-known examples of this Margravial culture.
At the 2026 Stiftungsfest, the Dr.-Alfred-Denig Foundation will present its work and open the castle to an interested audience. The exact program for the day – concerts, readings, castle tours – will be announced before the date on the event calendar of the municipality of Haag and via the foundation's representatives.
The limited capacity (around 60 people for the castle park and armoury, smaller for the Golden Hall and Fireplace Room) makes advance registration advisable.
In case of rain: Relocation of program points to the historic interiors. Detailed program and registration details at haag-oberfranken.de.
Admission fee required (prices announced before the date). Registration recommended due to limited capacity.
