Nationwide UNESCO World Heritage Day at the Cathedral and St. Michael's Church under the motto Together for Peace and Understanding
Hildesheim is one of the few German cities with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites within its city limits: the Cathedral (Mariendom, St. Mariae Assumption) and St. Michael's Church. Both were added to the World Heritage List in 1985 and represent the outstanding significance of pre-Romanesque and Ottonian sacred architecture in Germany. World Heritage Day honors this international importance and makes the World Heritage Sites accessible to a broad audience.
The Cathedral is one of the most important cathedrals in Germany. Its core dates back to the 11th century; heavily damaged in World War II, it was extensively rebuilt in the post-war period. It is famous for the Romanesque Bernward Door, the Christ Column, and the 1,000-year-old rose bush on the outer courtyard. The medieval art treasures of the cathedral are displayed in the Cathedral Museum.
St. Michael's Church, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered one of the most important examples of Ottonian sacred architecture. Built in the early 11th century under Bishop Bernward, it embodies the theological and architectural symbolism of the early medieval imperial mindset. The famous wooden ceiling (Michaelis Ceiling) is one of the largest preserved medieval wooden ceilings in Europe.
The 2026 UNESCO World Heritage Day is themed 'Together for Peace and Understanding'. This motto reflects UNESCO's original mission to contribute to peace and international understanding through education, science, and culture. World Heritage Sites, as places of shared human and cultural history, are ideal anchors for this.
Guided tours, concerts, and hands-on activities will take place at both World Heritage Sites throughout the day. Special guided tours focusing on architecture, art treasures, and history provide background knowledge that is often not accessible during a regular visit. Concerts – usually featuring sacred music, often related to the World Heritage architecture – utilize the acoustic qualities of the spaces. Hands-on activities for children and families make the day an experience for the youngest visitors as well.
On this special day, the World Heritage Sites – including special guided tours and concerts – are accessible free of charge. This gesture is part of the nationwide World Heritage Day concept and aims to keep access to the World Heritage Sites as low as possible.
UNESCO World Heritage Day has been celebrated nationwide on the first Sunday in June since 2005 and is an initiative of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany. Programs take place simultaneously in over 40 World Heritage Sites across Germany – Hildesheim is one of the traditional World Heritage cities that celebrates the day with particular commitment.
As in previous years, World Heritage Day will be celebrated with a packed program at both World Heritage Sites. Special guided tours will provide background knowledge on architecture, art history, and theology that goes beyond a regular visit.
The detailed program will be published in spring 2026 on hildesheim-tourismus.de/welterbetag. Registration is recommended for some special guided tours.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
