Founding festival of Gleißenberg's oldest association in the Bavarian Forest
The Gleißenberg Volunteer Fire Brigade, founded on February 12, 1872, is considered by the municipality to be the oldest and most traditional association in the village. Over more than 150 years, the brigade has continuously expanded its duties: from classic fire protection and technical assistance at traffic accidents to operations after storms and floods.
Today, under Commander Sebastian Riederer and Chairman Stefan Rampf, the brigade is one of the most active associations in the 700-inhabitant community at the foot of the Bavarian Forest mountains. A children's fire brigade is currently being established. In the run-up to the anniversary, the brigade is proving its capabilities in regular drills – such as the performance test together with the Grabitz Volunteer Fire Brigade in November 2025.
From May 22 to 24, 2026, the anniversary festival weekend will take place on the Gleißenberg festival grounds. As is customary for 150th-anniversary festivals in the Cham district, the program is divided into a ceremonial act, a beer tapping ceremony, a traditional costume evening, and the grand festival Sunday with a church parade and a procession. The exact festival caterer and detailed programs will be published on the FFW's Facebook page and in the municipality's press archive.
Gleißenberg, located on the western edge of the Upper Palatinate Forest (recreational area, approx. 700 inhabitants), offers ample reasons for a weekend stay around the festival weekend: hiking trails, the Bavarian Forest as a natural backdrop, and the typical Upper Palatinate inn culture. The festival tent is more than just a venue – it is the social center of the community during these three days.
The municipality of Gleißenberg confirms the 150th founding festival for May 2026; the date May 22–24 is registered in the regional event calendar. As with comparable 150th-anniversary festivals in the Cham district (FFW Chamerau, FFW Hof, FFW Traitsching, FFW Grafenwiesen), the weekend follows the classic Lower Bavarian festival schedule:
The detailed program, festival caterer, and bands will be communicated promptly via the FFW's Facebook page and the municipality's press archive.
Note: Detailed times and band names will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on the FFW page and in the local newsletter.
Gleißenberg is located in the Cham district near the Czech border. Arrive by car via Cham (A93, then B20). The festival grounds and tent are signposted. Parking is available in the village and in designated parking areas.
Friday, May 22, 2026 — Opening and Festival Evening.
Saturday, May 23, 2026 — Traditional Costume or Festival Evening.
Sunday, May 24, 2026 — Church Parade, Festival Procession, Festival Finale.
