29th edition of ceramic art and crafts in the heart of the university city
Jena, located in the Middle Saale Valley, is Thuringia's second-largest city with around 110,000 inhabitants. It is known for its university (Friedrich Schiller University, founded in 1558), the Carl Zeiss plant (global leader in optics), and its close connection to the giants of German literature (Goethe, Schiller, Fichte, Hegel lectured here). The historic city center, with its market square, town hall, and the late Gothic St. Michael's Church, provides the ideal backdrop for the Pottery Market.
The Jena Pottery Market is among the oldest and largest pottery markets in Thuringia. For almost 30 years, it has brought together the ceramic community of Central Germany and beyond in the historic market square. Over 60 exhibitors — professional potters with their own workshops, hobby ceramists with experimental pieces, design studios with avant-garde forms — present a broad spectrum: functional ceramics (dishes, cups, jugs, bowls), decorative ceramics (vases, bowls, sculptures), garden ceramics (planters, fountains, bird baths), ceramic jewelry, and experimental art ceramics.
The special appeal of the Pottery Market: many exhibitors work directly at their stands — pottery wheels on-site, a pottery station for children, demonstrations of historical firing methods. Visitors can try their hand and shape a small piece under guidance. Different firing techniques (Raku, salt firing, wood firing) and glazing techniques (ash glaze, reduction firing, luster glazes) are also explained. It's a community college course and a market all in one.
The Pottery Market is organized by the municipal cultural institution JenaKultur. Accompanying events include musical entertainment (acoustic bands, street musicians), food stalls with regional specialties, and seating areas in the market square. Parents can bring their children to the pottery station while they hunt for bargains.
Visitors to the Pottery Market can combine their trip with Jena's highlights: the Goethe Memorial, the World of Optics (Carl Zeiss Museum with a large planetarium), the University's Botanical Gardens, the historic observation deck "JenTower" (on the 27th floor), or hikes in the Saale Valley. A city with a special atmosphere — scientifically curious, culturally open, and vibrantly youthful thanks to the university.
For two days, Jena's historic market square transforms into a ceramic market with over 60 exhibitors. Starting as early as 8 AM on Saturday and from 10 AM to 6 PM on Sunday. The unusually early Saturday opening allows early birds to secure the best pieces before the crowds.
