A Special Kind of City Festival
Marktfeierei is not a classic city festival. Instead of stages with headliners, the format relies on a central open-air stage in a 360° format directly on the Market Square: no backstage, no separation between audience and artists, no VIP area. Music, children's activities, participatory workshops, and encounters for all generations are the building blocks.
A Festival via Crowdfunding
Since its founding in 2021, Marktfeierei has been financed, among other things, through crowdfunding. In 2026, a "crowdFeierei" campaign by the Initiative Innenstadt Jena will also run until April 8th, 2026, at jena-crowd.de/marktfeierei-2026. The funds will be used for technology, stage and music program, children's and participatory activities, infrastructure, and security.
Jena Market Square – The City's Stage
The historic Jena Market Square with the Hanfried monument in front of the town hall is the pulsating heart of the city. For three days, the square transforms into a city stage with culinary offerings, hands-on activities, and concerts – embedded in the vibrant mix of a university city, a center of optics and science, and the Saale river idyll.

As an independent city and the sixth-largest city in the new federal states, Jena is an important university and research location. Marktfeierei reflects this young, participatory urban culture: free admission, everyone can participate.

Sixth Edition 2026
Marktfeierei returns in 2026 for its sixth edition. Three days of open-air summer festival with the proven concept: 360° stage in the middle of the Market Square, participatory formats, concerts, children's program – all without admission fees.
Financing
The organizer is the Initiative Innenstadt Jena e.V.. Financing is provided, among other things, through the crowdFeierei crowdfunding campaign of the city of Jena at jena-crowd.de/marktfeierei-2026, which runs until April 8th, 2026. Use of funds: technology, stage, music program, children's and participatory activities, infrastructure, security.

Concept: 360° Stage
- Central open-air stage in the middle of Jena's Market Square – audience all around

Getting There
Train: Jena Westbahnhof or Paradies station (short walk to the city center), ICE stop Jena-Göschwitz with city center connection. Car: A4 exit Jena-Göschwitz, A9 exit Magdala.
Admission
Free. Food and drinks at the market are subject to payment. Donations and crowdfunding contributions are welcome.
Tip
Family time in the afternoon, concert highlights in the evening.
