The street music festival in Jena on the longest day of the year — free, open, and right in the city center
The Fête de la Musique was proclaimed in 1982 in Paris by the then Minister of Culture, Jack Lang. It follows a simple principle: on June 21, the longest day of the year, music should be played everywhere in the city — for free, open to everyone. Today, it is one of the world's largest decentralized music festivals, celebrated in over 540 cities in more than 110 countries. Jena has been a firm part of this movement since 2013 and is one of the most vibrant venues in Central Germany.
What makes the Fête de la Musique special is its decentralized setup: no central main stage, no headliners, no VIP area. Instead, squares, courtyards, cafés, galleries, churches, and shopping arcades become performance venues. On the Marktplatz, the Holzmarkt, in Johannisstraße, at the Stadtwerke customer center, and at the Johannistor, performances happen simultaneously — as you stroll, you'll constantly discover new sounds. Diversity is part of its DNA: singer-songwriters next to big bands, death metal trios next to women's choirs, house and techno DJ sets by the collective BassUp next to experimental avant-garde at Rosenkeller.
The festival runs in three stages: Starting at 2:00 PM, family and children's programs open at selected venues — interactive workshops, early concerts, creative activities. From 6:00 PM, courtyards and squares fill with bands. After sunset, the action moves into the clubs: Rosenkeller opens its doors for the official aftershow party with drum'n'bass, hard techno, and trance from collectives BassUp and AML. The open-air stage at Johannistor heats up from 6:00 PM with house and techno.
Jena, located in the Saale-Holzland and Saale Valley of the state of Thuringia, thrives on the mix of Friedrich Schiller University, the optics industry (Carl Zeiss, Jenoptik), and an active subculture scene. With around 110,000 inhabitants, the city (a district-free city) offers one of the highest densities of music associations, bands, and choirs in Thuringia. It is precisely this diversity that brings the Fête de la Musique to life — most musicians are locals or students who turn the city center into a stage for a day.
The 2026 edition falls on a Sunday, the astronomically longest day of the year, the summer solstice. The Initiative Innenstadt Jena e.V. expects — as in previous years — over fifty music acts at more than thirty venues. The program spans the entire day, ranging from singer-songwriter sets in cafés to big band concerts on the Marktplatz and an electronic open-air stage at Johannistor.
The full lineup will be gradually published in mid-May 2026 on fetedelamusique-jena.de and innenstadt-jena.de — with an interactive QR code map of all venues. Those who wish to open their own courtyard, shop, or inner courtyard as a stage, or perform themselves, can apply until early May.
Full venue list and stage times from May 2026 on fetedelamusique-jena.de and via the QR map on innenstadt-jena.de.
Admission to all concerts is free. Donations for the Initiative Innenstadt Jena e.V. are welcome. Aftershow party at Rosenkeller with its own admission fee (see rosenkeller.org). Food and drinks at the venues at usual catering prices.
