Anniversary Festival for the 100th Anniversary of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen District
The Volunteer Fire Brigade Schwallungen was founded in 1926 and will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026. The municipality of Schwallungen is located in the Werra Valley, in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district, between Meiningen and Bad Salzungen. An anniversary of this magnitude is cause for a ten-day festival program in rural Thuringia — the entire community pitches in.
The anniversary festival runs from June 5th to 14th, 2026, and combines various formats:
As with any major anniversary in a rural community, clubs, schools, kindergartens, and neighboring brigades take on parts of the program. The entire festival weekend thrives on joint setup, catering by local restaurateurs, and the efforts of hundreds of volunteers.
The 2026 festival program is spread over two weekends and the intervening week. The focus days are the two weekends with family programs, concerts, and the grand parade on the final Sunday.
