Volks- und Schülertriathlon at Schwimmzentrum Heidebad Iserlohn
Iserlohn, with around 92,000 inhabitants in the Märkischer Kreis district, North Rhine-Westphalia, is the largest town in the Sauerland region. Nestled between the Ruhr and Lenne rivers, on the northern edge of the Sauerland low mountain range, the town is a traditional center for hiking, cycling, and local recreation. The Schwimmzentrum Heidebad (Heidebad Swimming Center) on Kastanienallee, an indoor and outdoor pool complex with a modern competition pool, serves as the starting point for the Iserlohn Triathlon.
The Iserlohner Triathlon Team e.V. is a sports club focused on triathlon — combining swimming, cycling, and running. The annual Iserlohn Triathlon at Heidebad is the club's main public event. The season opener is deliberately scheduled for early April, a time when most other triathlons haven't started yet, making the Iserlohn Triathlon a fixed date in the training calendars of many athletes from North Rhine-Westphalia.
The 2026 program includes three categories:
The distances are intentionally short and designed for beginners — anyone wanting to try triathlon without years of training will find a suitable entry point here. The swimming, cycling, and running segments are technically uncomplicated, and the transition area is manageable and concentrated around the pool area.
The swimming takes place in the indoor pool of the Heidebad swimming center — no seasonal restrictions due to cold spring water. This is followed by the transition to the cycling route around Kastanienallee/Heidefeld, featuring quiet road sections and controlled traffic. The running route goes through the residential area around the pool, with turnarounds and spectator hotspots. The finish and transition areas are concentrated at Heidebad.
The Iserlohn Triathlon is one of the oldest triathlons in the Sauerland and Märkischer Kreis regions. With its early April date, it serves as the season opener for many athletes from North Rhine-Westphalia, Westphalia, and the Ruhr area. Families find an introductory format in the Bambini and Schüler categories that offers children fun and their first real race experience — often within the club environment of Iserlohn's swimming and sports clubs.
