Three days of pirates, harbor festivals, and shanties — the maritime summer festival on the Baltic Sea
Eckernförde is located in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, on the bay of the same name. The town has around 22,000 inhabitants and is one of the most popular Baltic Sea resorts on the fjord — with a sandy beach over two kilometers long, a historic old town, and Schleswig-Holstein's oldest harbor close to the city center. It is precisely this harbor backdrop that makes the Piratenspektakel such a fitting summer festival.
The spectacle takes place over the first weekend in August. It begins with the storming of the beach: a pirate band jumps from the historic Hansekogge (which travels specially from Kiel), conquers the harbor, the town hall, and the city administration — a theatrical staging that thrills thousands of onlookers every year. Along the harbor promenade, showmen set up amusement rides, stages, snack stands, and sales booths.
In the pirate village, under the supervision of 'Captain Renate', children learn to bake stick bread, felt, drum, and do small crafts. Here, the world of piracy is made playfully accessible — with competitions, skill games, and hands-on workshops.
The 2026 stage program is diverse: the Top 40 cover band TONADOS plays hits from several decades, BACKDROP delivers an 80s party show, and DJ Ralf Burnett provides the late evening hours with electro sets. In addition, there are walking acts, shanty choirs, and stilt walkers.
The Piratenspektakel is a non-profit event. Proceeds from food and special income go to non-profit projects in the town and to support children with cancer. Admission to the festival grounds is free.
From July 31 to August 2, 2026, pirates will once again capture the Baltic Sea resort of Eckernförde. The kickoff is on Friday evening when the historic Hansekogge from Kiel docks in the harbor and its crew storms the beach with wild cries — a staging with theater, pyrotechnics, and drummers that has been a firm part of the regional summer calendar every year.
Over the three days, there will be a stage program, amusement rides, snack stands, and the large pirate village. Proceeds from food stands and special income go to non-profit projects and to support children with cancer.
The event is embedded in a charity movement — proceeds from food and special income go to non-profit projects and children with cancer.
