European Championship of the Olympic Skiff Classes directly after Kiel Week
The 2026 European Championship brings together the three Olympic skiff and multihull classes in the same sailing area: 49er (Men's Skiff), 49erFX (Women's Skiff), and Nacra 17 (Mixed Multihull). The venue is the Segelclub Eckernförde in Eckernförde, Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, Schleswig-Holstein state. The sheltered inner bay with reliable summer winds is considered one of Northern Europe's premier sailing grounds – it's no coincidence that Kiel Week, the neighboring Olympic sailing event, holds its races here.
The 2026 Europeans are strategically scheduled immediately after Kiel Week: Top crews in the Olympic classes can sail both regattas as a double header, combining two of the season's most important European events without extensive travel. For the teams, it's also a key date on the path to the LA 2028 Olympic Games: The Europeans count towards qualification and provide valuable points for the world rankings.
Unlike major outdoor festivals, the action takes place on the water – but Eckernförde harbor offers excellent conditions to watch the fast skiffs up close. Before and after the races, the boat handling at the docks becomes a spectacle, and in the evenings, press conferences and award ceremonies are held at the Yacht Club. Eckernförde benefits from close integration between the harbor, promenade, and old town – sailing fans can combine watching the races with a relaxing beach day or a stroll through the historic city center.
Around 150 crews from 30 nations are expected, including reigning world and Olympic champions. Races run between 11 AM and 5 PM, depending on the wind. A live broadcast of the decisive Medal Races on the final day is planned on the channels of the International 49er Class Association.
From July 7th to 12th, 2026, Eckernförde Bay will become the European center for Olympic skiff and multihull sailing. With the 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17, the three most dynamic classes of the Olympic sailing fleet will compete: The 49ers are the fastest two-person skiffs, the 49erFX their female counterpart, and the Nacra 17 is the only Olympic mixed multihull with foiling technology. All three classes demand tactical finesse, athletic conditioning, and excellent boat control at speeds up to 25 knots.
After three days of arrival, measurement, and practice sailing, six race days are scheduled – two to three races per class will be started daily. The format traditionally concludes with the Medal Race on Sunday: The top 10 crews in each class will race for the European titles and medals, with all points counting double.
