Traditional Easter Bonfire of the Bürgergilde Munster on Holy Saturday at the Schützenplatz Zum Schützenwald
The Easter Bonfire dates back to pre-Christian Germanic customs that celebrated the rebirth of nature and the driving away of winter in spring. With Christianity, the custom was integrated into the Easter period and symbolized the resurrection of Christ. In Northern Germany, and especially in the Heide region, the Easter Bonfire is a living tradition to this day, maintained in almost every village.
The Bürgergilde Munster e.V. is one of the traditional marksmen's clubs of the Heide municipality of Munster. The Easter Bonfire, along with the Winter Ball, the Marksmen's and Folk Festival, and other events, is a firm fixture in their calendar year. The Schützenplatz Zum Schützenwald 46 offers ample space for the large woodpile and the crowd of spectators.
Weeks before Easter, members begin collecting and stacking the wood. Tree trimmings, shrub cuttings, and old furniture parts are piled up to form a woodpile several meters high. The height and size of the pile are an expression of the guild's commitment and a source of considerable pride.
In the evening of Holy Saturday, as soon as darkness falls – usually from 8 PM onwards – the fire is ceremonially lit. The flames shoot high into the night sky, and the crackling of the wood becomes the dominant sound of the evening. Several hundred visitors gather around the fire, holding warm drinks, and enjoying the unique atmosphere.
Bratwurst stands, drink stands with mulled wine, beer, and lemonade, as well as small seating areas complement the custom. Members of the Bürgergilde are on hand as helpers, live music or a DJ provide the acoustic backdrop. There is an Easter Bunny activity for the children.
Holy Saturday is traditionally the day for Easter Bonfires in Northern Germany. Several clubs, communities, and farms light their fires simultaneously, illuminating the Heide skies on this evening.
