Traditional village fair in the Maifeld village of Mertloch between Pellenz and Maifeld
Mertloch is a small municipality in the district of Mayen-Koblenz on the border between Maifeld and Pellenz. Like many places in this scenically attractive region, Mertloch cultivates its village fair as the most important social occasion of the year. The connection with Whit Monday is typical for the Maifeld region, where numerous villages hold their Kirmes festivals on church holidays – an indication of the historical connection between patron saints' days, church consecrations, and folk festivals (Volksfest).
On Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, residents, former Mertloch residents, and guests from surrounding villages will gather for the Kirmes. The village center with the festival grounds will be prepared, a marquee will be set up, and small rides and fairground stalls will be arranged. The local clubs – usually the sports club, the music club, the volunteer fire department, or the church community – will provide catering and contribute significantly to the atmosphere.
The program follows the classic village fair structure: a morning service with a subsequent early-morning pint (Frühschoppen), lunch with traditional Maifeld cuisine or standard dishes like bratwurst, fries, and salads, and an afternoon family program with coffee, cake, and children's activities. The evening typically features dancing or a live band, often with the participation of neighboring Maifeld clubs.
Such Whit Monday Kirmes festivals have an important social function for village communities: they provide an occasion for intergenerational encounters, promote cohesion among clubs, and offer former residents and relatives from afar a reason to visit their hometown. They also offer an authentic glimpse into regional culture for Maifeld tourists, away from larger events.
The Maifeld administrative district and the Mayen-Koblenz district offer a dense sequence of such village Kirmes festivals in the second half of May and in June – Mertloch joins a tradition that makes the Maifeld one of the liveliest folk festival regions in Rhineland-Palatinate. The exact program details will be published shortly before the event via local notices and the Maifeld event calendar.
The 2026 edition continues the Whit Monday tradition. The municipality of Mertloch is organizing the festival in cooperation with local clubs. A detailed daily program will be published shortly before the event via local notices. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
