15th Edition themed "Onye-lje / The Traveler"
The Afrika Festival Potsdam/Brandenburg is one of the most important formats for African and Pan-African culture in Brandenburg. Since 2011, the International Center for German and Immigrants (ICDI) e.V., led by founder Charity Okezie-Andesine, has organized this annual festival, which attracts more attention and visitors each year. 2026 marks the 15th edition.
The theme for the 15th edition is "Onye-lje / The Traveler". "Onye-lje" is the Igbo term (one of Nigeria's largest languages) for the traveler — and the theme perfectly captures the festival's self-understanding: African and Pan-African culture is not static, but travels, mixes, and reappears in new forms. From traditional Highlife from Ghana to Nigerian-influenced Afrobeats to Black-German identity in Brandenburg — everything is in motion, everything is a journey.
The 2026 edition is among the 15 festival formats supported by the State Capital Potsdam as part of the 2026 Festival Funding — selected from a total of 18 applications. The exact date in 2026 will be communicated by ICDI in spring/summer. Previous editions usually took place in July or August (e.g., July 19–20, 2024) — the open-air nature makes the summer season the natural timing.
The festival offers a packed program:
The traditional main venue is Luisenplatz in Potsdam — the central square west of the Brandenburg Gate, surrounded by neoclassical buildings and with direct access to Brandenburger Straße. There's a special symbolism in the Afrika Festival being celebrated precisely here: between the symbols of Prussian history and the sounds of African drums, a vibrant picture of modern, diverse Potsdam emerges. The state capital thus underscores its claim to an open, international identity.
The International Center for German and Immigrants (ICDI) e.V. was founded with the goal of promoting dialogue between German and African communities in Brandenburg. In addition to the Afrika Festival, the association organizes educational projects, workshops, and empowerment programs for Black youth. Visiting the festival directly supports a committed civil society initiative — and allows you to experience one of Potsdam's most vibrant summer days.
The complete lineup will be published by ICDI in spring/summer 2026. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years:
Note: Specific band names and program items will be entered here as soon as ICDI officially announces them.
