A Neighbourhood Flea Market with History
Westware is a typical example of Potsdam's neighbourhood culture. Since 2017, the Potsdam West Neighbourhood Network e.V. has organised a large neighbourhood flea market twice a year along the street section from Sellostraße to Hans-Sachs-Straße. The spring edition in 2026 will take place on April 25.
Concept
Unlike commercial flea markets, Westware is a resident's flea market: anyone living in the neighbourhood sets up their stall directly in front of their house – in the front garden, on the pavement, in the driveway. No pre-registration is necessary, and no stall fee is due. Around 100 stalls line the street, with toys, children's clothing, books, household items, furniture, and bric-a-brac changing hands.
What Makes Westware Special
The event functions as a neighbourhood festival. Those who sell here know each other – Westware is also a meeting place, a chat over the garden fence. Unsold items must be taken back at the end of the day – "It is also important that all unsold items are taken back," emphasises the neighbourhood network.
Potsdam West as a Neighbourhood
Potsdam West is one of the most vibrant districts in the state capital of Brandenburg – located between the city centre and Sanssouci Park, characterised by a mix of old Wilhelminian-era buildings, new GDR-era buildings, and an active resident community. The neighbourhood network sees itself as a platform for neighbourhood activities – Westware is one of its best-known formats.
Brandenburg and Neighbourhood Culture
In the state of Brandenburg and the independent city of Potsdam, formats like Westware demonstrate how lively neighbourhood culture can be away from the big festivals. Anyone strolling through Potsdam West in spring will hardly miss the flea market bustle during the Westware weekend.
